Networks of interest defence
The rise of US asset management and the expansion of assetisation into essential sectors such as healthcare or housing have intensified political scrutiny and public backlash. Amid counter-mobilisations and calls for social values in capitalism, this study examines asset managers’ networks that serve as an infrastructure of interest defence. Empirically, we map executive and board members’ affiliations with policy organisations and philanthropic …

This article provides a systematic synthesis of contemporary elite sociology through the analytical lens of change and stability. We distinguish between two types of change: change within elites, referring to transformations in elite composition, circulation, or internal characteristics; and change by elites, designating processes whereby elites reshape broader social structures, norms, or inequalities. Through a systematic review of 164 empirica…
Capillary Power in Swiss Finance
Over the past decades the Swiss finance industry has faced increasing regulatory scrutiny, leading to disruptions in the sector and new political alliances. In this context, we examine how top financial managers defend their interests. Building on sociological research on corporate power and network ties, we focus organisations that facilitate coordination and the formation of strategic connections. Drawing on BoardEx data, we analyse top manager…
Bureaucracy and patrimonialism on Wall Street
Echoing the recent revival of elite studies, we ask how financialization shapes the composition of contemporary elites and how organizational mechanisms transform its characteristics in terms of class, gender and race. We ask whether the bureaucratization of finance contributed to a 'purge' of particularisms. Or to the contrary, whether class, race and gender have become more salient criteria of elite selection with the emergence of neo-patrimoni…
Elite recruitment in US finance
Status attainment theories assert that individuals are recruited based on the length and functional background of their training. Elite theories assume that top managers often deviate from these socially acceptable mechanisms of status attainment to entrench their advantage. In this study, focusing on the US financial sector, we investigate whether educational institution prestige-rather than the subject or length of education-increasingly influe…
Status hierarchies and norm diffusion
In this article, I argue that small, but lucrative high-status subgroups lead to an upward ratcheting of compensation levels through the diffusion of norms. Combining relational theories of inequalities and theories of social norms I show how subfield status hierarchies play out at the firm level. I examine the impact of excess compensation in alternative finance (private equity, hedge and venture funds) on traditional finance. Based on multileve…
