The English legal profession is, overwhelmingly, a male profession. Less than one lawyer in ten is a woman. In October 1980 there were 447 practising women barristers, 9.7% of the total, and in the year 1979/80 The Law Society issued 3,700 practising certificates to women, who comprised 9.8% of all practising solicitors.[1] The senior levels of the profession are almost exclusively a male preserve.
