Precarious work
This paper provides an interdisciplinary critical integrative review of research on precarious work. Based on a review of 311 records, we develop an integrated framework that brings together the antecedents, outcomes and responses to precarious work found in the literature. We also explain the discrepancy between the ideas of key influential thinkers about the existence of political potential of precarity, and the lack of fieldwork evidence that …
Misclassification, Tipping and the Responsibilisation of Work in the Global South
Workers are increasingly expected to take on responsibilities for those aspects of their wellbeing that were historically attended to by their employers - an unsettling trend that has been termed 'responsibilisation'. While this phenomenon is manifesting across the globe and poses significant implications for both employers and employees, the effects of responsibilisation are perhaps most detrimentally felt by workers in the Global South, where t…
Undocumented immigrants at work
The undocumented immigrant represents a socio-legal category, referring to a subject who does not have legal standing to be in the country in which they are located. Extending from their lack of legal standing, undocumented immigrant workers in the United States occupy spaces marked by extreme conditions of vulnerability, which were exacerbated by the election of Donald Trump as president in 2016. The aim of this ethnographic study is to make sen…
The Business of (Im)migration
Faculty's subjective well-being
Purpose In this article, the authors aim to achieve a deeper understanding of the aspects that influence academic faculty's subjective well-being (SWB). For this purpose, the authors focus on scholars who work in a business school that not only is located in Latin America, but is in a transition process, changing from being solely a teaching-oriented to a research-oriented model due to Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)…
Colonization, migration, and right-wing extremism
The aim of this essay is to illuminate the lived experiences of Victoria—an undocumented immigrant woman of Mexican origin working and living in the United States. Drawing on an in-depth interview conducted with Victoria following the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, we identify a set of discursive and material conditions that inform her lived reality. By examining three mutually constituting stages of Victoria’s life, …
Academic life under institutional pressures for AACSB accreditation
Scholars have increasingly recognized how efforts among business schools to attain or maintain accreditation from external agencies (i.e. Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business [AACSB]) have engendered myriad consequences on the experiences of academic faculty members. Extant research that has investigated this phenomenon empirically has focused on business schools in advanced economy contexts, where such institutions are relativel…
