Associations between neighbourhood age-friendliness and social networks among older adults
Covid-19 infections in German long-term care facilities
We found evidence of individual, facility, and regional levels factors associated with COVID-19 infections among older adults in LTCFs. Future measures to combat infections, outbreaks, and pandemics should take an orchestrated multilevel approach
When to care? A Maihda analysis of intersectional inequalities in the age of caregiving onset using European longitudinal data
Care for older relatives is central in ageing societies, and the timing of caregiving onset significantly shapes caregivers’ health, social and employment trajectories. However, differences in the age at which family caregiving begins and their potential social and intersectional stratification have not been sufficiently explored. Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we analysed individuals becoming daily…
Future Caregiving Responsibilities, Employment Uncertainties, and Expected Childbearing Behavior
In societies experiencing declining birth rates, understanding factors that influence childbearing decisions is of interest. We used a factorial survey experiment to investigate how scenarios of future caregiving responsibilities toward aging parents and employment uncertainties shape the expected childbearing behavior of a fictitious couple. Respondents from the nationally representative German Socio-Economic Panel Innovation Sample (SOEP-IS) ( …
Decreased health service use among migrants improves through an internal locus of control, especially in men
We explore the role of internal locus of control (LOC), migration status and gender, in healthcare utilization, using the Andersen Model. It addresses the knowledge gap in understanding how these factors influence healthcare access, especially in migrant populations. Utilization was assessed using the 2020 German Socioeconomic Panel with 26,028 adults (6,968 migrants). In this cross-sectional survey study, four outcomes were analyzed via regressi…
Intersectional analysis of social disparities in type 2 diabetes risk among adults in Germany
Type 2 diabetes risk differed between intersectional strata and can to some extent be explained at strata level. The role of intersectional effects was minor and needs to be further investigated. Findings suggest a need for specific preventive measures targeted at large groups with increased diabetes risk, such as men and persons with low educational level
Intersectional Inequalities in the Transition to Grandparenthood and Cognitive Functioning
This study highlights the importance of social determinants for understanding heterogeneities in older adults' level of cognitive functioning and its association with the transition to grandparenthood. Cumulative disadvantages negatively affect cognitive functioning, hence adopting an intersectional lens is useful to decompose inequalities and derive tailored interventions to promote equal healthy aging
A school-based educational on-site vaccination intervention for adolescents in an urban area in Germany
ISRCTN, ISRCTN18026662 . Pilot study for main trial registered 8 December 2017
Psychometric properties of a nationwide survey for adults with and without diabetes
Based on results of the current study, some of the scales applied in the survey can be recommended for present and future analyses of the survey data and for future surveys (e.g. diabetes distress, patient-provider-relationship in people with diabetes). Other scales should be interpreted and used with caution (e.g. depressive symptoms in people with diabetes) while others should be reformulated, interpreted only as single items, or need further i…
Quality of life in people with dementia living in nursing homes
We found that momentary quality of life, reliably assessed by tablet, was associated with comprehensive measures of quality of life and depressive symptoms in people with dementia. Broader use of tablet-based assessments within frequent QoL measurements may enhance time management of nursing staff and may improve the care quality and communication between staff and people with dementia
Multimorbidity Profiles in German Centenarians
Patterns of comorbidities describe the complexity of geriatric multimorbidity more appropriately than an approach focused on a single disease. The profiles described by this specific research may inform clinicians and health care planners for the oldest old
Physical activity across the life-span
We tested whether the relationship between subjective physical age and physical activity is mediated by planning. Participants came from a broad age range (25-78 years, M = 39.57, standard deviation = 10.75) and reported relatively good health ( M = 3.36, standard deviation = 0.90). The model supported the suggested mediation ( β = −.01, standard error = .01, p = .042). Feeling physically younger is associated with higher planning to adopt higher…
Social cognitions about food choice in children aged five to eight years
How to measure quality of life in shared-housing arrangements? A comparison of dementia-specific instruments
The seductive quality of central human capabilities
In an era when relativism and questions of modernity have unsettled the premises and goals of the development project, there is a seductive quality to the universalism of Nussbaum's capabilities approach. We query Nussbaum's philosophically based contribution and raise epistemological concerns about her commitment to a list of central human capabilities. We argue that attention to state forms and practices, as well as unequal power relations, mus…
