Exploring the Real-World Applicability of an Intercultural Music Engagement (Icme) Framework
As our societies become increasingly multicultural, our collective ability to understand and tolerate differences is critical for social cohesion. Music has been used by many organisations to help foster connection across cultural divides, yet research suggests it is not always a simple exchange. This paper tests the feasibility of a framework formerly proposed by the current authors for helping people navigate the intercultural music experience,…
The Green Encounters
Since the colonial era of the East Indies, multiple ruling regimes have promoted a certain narrative to utilize the forests on Mount Halimun Salak for nature preservation and profit accumulation. Existing studies of the designation of Halimun Salak as a conservation area have shown that such an establishment led to conflicts over land and livelihoods with the surrounding communities and local farmers. Complementing these studies, my qualitative r…
The Fantasy of National Rice Barn and Reality of Farmers in Indramayu
This paper centers on Indramayu's designation as the "national rice barn" (Daerah Lumbung Padi Nasional). Contrary to the believed narrative, our findings show that Indramayu’s agricultural dreams have been subsidized by other income generating activities, particularly from migrant remittance. We argue that the extensive environmental degradation and ecological vulnerabilities experienced in Indramayu have compelled small-scale farmers to pursue …
New Variants
I remember when “zooming” meant something like careening down a hill on my ten-speed with my hair whipping back and the occasional bug in my teeth—because I can’t help but smile, of course. Or cruising in Ann’s parents’ car following some guy she knows, and too many of us sixteen or almost-sixteen-year-old girlfriends are smooshed in the back seat, and we slide all up on top of one another as she zooms through yellow lights and takes every too-ti…

Sleep-Related Myoclonus in Rheumatic Pain Modulation Disorder (Fibrositis Syndrome) and in Excessive Daytime Somnolence
We describe a new syndrome, Rheumatic Pain Modulation Disorder (RPMD) ("fibrositis syndrome") with sleep-related myoclonus (involuntary periodic leg movements). Measures of sleepiness, fatigue and pain, before and after sleep, and aspects of sleep of nine subjects (Ss) with RPMD and sleep-related myoclonus were compared to nine subjects with excessive daytime somnolence and sleep-related myoclonus. In eight of the RPMD with sleep-related myoclonu…
