The Process of Remembering
Experiences of gradually recovering lost memories may shed some light on the cognitive mechanism underlying remembering. We (1) easily remember the external frame (the context) of the lost memory; (2) experience the emergence of its internal frame (category or genre); (3) recall its configuration, its rhythmic skeleton or its dynamic structure; (4) and even sketch it by a gesture; (5) recall our evaluation of the person or our impression of the e…

A New Method of Investigating the Perception of Prosodic Features
Studies are reported illustrating possible applications of the Fabre-Fourcin laryngograph. The laryngograph may help to reveal prosodic features conveying emotive attitudes, or characterizing different verbal genres. It facilitates the exploration of the semantic field of "melodic clichés," and that of "implicative" intonation patterns. It proves to be a useful tool in teaching intonation patterns of foreign languages
The Metaphor as a Mediator Between Semantic and Analogic Modes of Thought [and Comments and Reply]
Anthropologists have overlooked the importance of the metaphor in human culture. Core etaphors can help us identify ultimate cosmic constructs underlying a given social or religious world view. But, even more centrally, metaphors can serve as key data in our attempts to understand how a cultural system adapts to and incorporates sensated experience from the physical world. Metaphors thus provide both a "reality" principle and a "tool" for change.…
