  • Conditional Spatial Patterning

    Open Access•Albertus Voorrips, John M O’shea et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1987•Citada por: 5•Referências: 7

This paper discusses a method for the analysis of spatial patterning which is based on aspects of the study of spatial autocorrelation. By means of computer simulation it is shown that the join count statistic (Cliff and Ord 1973; Moran 1950) has a wider validity than was presumed originally. Some archaeological applications from the analysis of a late Mesolithic cemetery in Karelia, USSR, are presented

  • On the Use of Statistics for Testing Archaeological Hypotheses

  • Descriptive Statements, Covering Laws, and Theories in Archaeology [and Comments and Reply]

    D Read, Dwight W Read et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1978•Citada por: 7

The paradigm for explanation in archaeology presented by the "new archaeologists" is reviewed and shown to need further elaboration. It is argued that that presentation has overemphasized the form of explanatory arguments and insufficiently considered their content. Not all explanatory arguments provide intuitively satisfactory explanations of particular observations. Instead, intuitively satisfactory explanations require general theories which s…
