  • ‘Poetry Is a Flavourful Ball’

Open Access•G Field•ARTICLE•South Asia Journal of South Asian…•2026

In twentieth century Sri Lanka, one of the most influential philologists of Sinhala literature was Munidasa Cumaratunga (1887–1944). In 1939, he published Kavi Śikṣāva (Poetics) to explain how to appreciate and compose metred Sinhala poetry. But he did so through a fictional dialogue between a groom-to-be and his future bride. In this article, I argue that Cumaratunga wrote these dialogues to reformulate Sinhala poetics according to his prescript…

In 1973, Radio Maldives commenced a project to convert Salahuddeen's translation into twenty-nine…

The purpose of the voyage was to visit the islands of Ari Atoll. Manikufaanu crafted 171 verses according to the rules of a Maldivian genre of poetry called raivaru . • Poetry for linguistic description

    Open Access•G Field•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2022•Referências: 6

In 1890, the Maldivian judge and poet Sheikh Muhammad Jamaluddin connected poetry with linguistic description in two ways. First, when he described features of the Dhivehi language with the aid of Arabic linguistic theory, he used Dhivehi poetry as linguistic evidence for correct usage. Second, he authored Dhivehi-language poetry about Arabic linguistic theory. Cosmopolis scholarship relates a narrative of how the wide circulation of Sanskrit, Ar…

  • Modernizing Composition

    G Field•BOOK•Modernizing Composition•2020

"The study of South Asian music falls under the purview of ethnomusicology, whereas that of South Asian literature falls under South Asian studies. As a consequence of this academic separation, scholars rarely take notice of connections between South Asian song and poetry. Modernizing Composition overcomes this disciplinary fragmentation by examining the history of Sinhala-language song and poetry in twentieth-century Sri Lanka. Garrett Field des…

  • Singing and Song

    Open Access•G Field•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2020

The intellectual history of song in linguistic anthropology reveals that often the final step for early twentieth‐century scholars was to publish transcriptions and translations organized through a classification scheme. By midcentury scholars trained in anthropological linguistics still accorded value to transcription and translation but they also conducted formal analysis of song's linguistic features. In the late twentieth century linguistic a…

  • Scrambling Syllables in Sung Poetry of the Maldives

    G Field•ARTICLE•Anthropological linguistics•2019

The most popular form of poetry in Dhivehi (an Indo-Aryan language of the Maldives) before the twentieth century, raivaru , utilizes the scrambling of syllables as a poetic device. Scrambling harnesses processes typically associated with language games. Yet, while players of language games transform words according to rigid processes, Maldivian poets scramble syllables in response to six poetic constraints. Two broad forms of scrambling may be di…

  • Modern Contours

G Field, Garrett M Field•ARTICLE•South Asia Journal of South Asian…•2016

A consensus is growing among scholars of modern Indian literature that the thematic development of Hindi, Urdu and Bangla poetry was consistent to a considerable extent. I use the term ‘consistent’ to refer to the transitions between 1900 and 1960 from didacticism to romanticism to modernist realism. The purpose of this article is to build upon this consensus by revealing that as far south as Sri Lanka, Sinhala-language poetry developed along the…

In this article, I juxtapose the ways the "father of modern Sinhala drama," John De Silva, and the Sinhala language reformer, Munidasa Cumaratunga, utilized music for different nationalist projects. First, I explore how De Silva created musicals that articulated Arya-Sinhala nationalism to support the Buddhist Revival. Second, I investigate how Cumaratunga, who spearheaded the Hela-Sinhala movement, asserted that genuine Sinhala song should be ri…

  • Religious Commitment and Work Orientations of Turkish Students

    G Field•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1968

The working hypothesis of this paper is that a direct connection exists between the prescriptions and teachings of Islam and the social and economic attitudes and behaviors of its adherents. Contradictory elements do exist within Islamic thought which, it can be argued, might lead to differential behavior. Nevertheless, without presenting a formal survey of the literature, it can be safely said that in both popular and scholarly works a number of…
