Translanguaging in science education
Despite studies showing the effectiveness of Mother Tongue Education (MTE) across Africa (e.g., UNESCO Citation1978; Bamgbose Citation1983; Ouane and Glanz Citation2010), most sub-Saharan African governments seem reluctant to invest in MTE initiatives. Also, the MTE literature has focused primarily on the role of governments in MTE, overlooking how individuals can participate in MTE pedagogical interventions. The question, then, is: How can indiv…
What contact did to Yoruba morphosyntax
In this article, I show that, due to the influence of English, major changes have occurred in Yoruba morphosyntax. The changes I identify include (i) the emergence of a transitive-marking Mid Tone Syllable (MTS) on loan verbs; (ii) the emergence of a pattern in which native verbs select accusative weak pronouns while loan verbs select genitive weak pronouns; (iii) changes in word order; (iv) syntactic doubling; and (v) category changes that apply…
Indigenizing modern STEM for the public
Projects seeking to indigenize STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) for the public have recently emerged in digital spaces in Africa. These ‘STEM-for-the-public’ projects are conceptualized within the framework of ‘indigenization’ that cuts across the STEM and social science fields. I identify two paradigms in the indigenization literature: the language (L) paradigm and the methodology–conclusion dyad (MCD) paradigm. Although S…
Emerging grammars in contemporary Yoruba phonology
This article provides a description and an Optimality Theory (OT) analysis of contact-induced changes and variation in contemporary Yoruba syllable structure. The article claims that a major diachronic change has occurred in the syllable structure of Yoruba phonology due to its continued contact with English, resulting in the invention, preservation, and hypercorrection of clusters and codas. I characterize this change in terms of OT constraint r…
Yorùbá Sentential Negative Markers
The main claim of this paper is that Yoruba has only four sentential negative markers, kìí, kò, kọ́ and má, contrary to a traditional assumption that there are six of them (Fabunmi 2013). It is argued that these markers can be subcategorized into two morphemes: the k-morpheme and the má-morpheme. The k- and má-morphemes are distinguished based on mood. The k-morpheme is used in realis mood while the má-morpheme is used in irrealis mood. Kìí, kò, …
