The Political Life of an Epidemic
Zimbabwe's catastrophic cholera outbreak of 2008-9 saw an unprecedented number of people affected, with 100,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths. Cholera, however, was much more than a public health crisis: it represented the nadir of the country's deepening political and economic crisis of 2008. This study focuses on the political life of the cholera epidemic, tracing the historical origins of the outbreak, examining the social pattern of its unfol…
Rhodes Must Fall in Oxford
Rhodes Must Fall (RMF) announced its presence in the University of Oxford through rigorous calls to tackle ‘the plague of colonial iconography (in the form of statues, plaques and paintings) that seeks to whitewash and distort history’ throughout the university and beyond. In addition, RMF aimed to reform the Eurocentric curricula that dominate the university’s pedagogy across diverse fields of study and to address the under-representation and in…
The politics of cholera, crisis and citizenship in urban Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe’s catastrophic cholera outbreak of 2008/09 resulted in an unprecedented 100,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths. Based on extensive fieldwork, I examine the views of residents in Harare’s high-density…
The role of leadership in people-centred health systems
Recently, increasing attention has been given to behavioural and relational aspects of the people who both define and shape health systems, placing them at the core. A growing refrain includes the assertion that important decisions determining health system performance, including agenda setting, policy formulation and policy implementation, are made by people. Within this actor-oriented approach, good leadership has been identified as a key contr…
The Social Imaginaries of Women's Peace Activism in Northern Uganda
The metanarrative of global feminism is often constructed as a progressive and emancipatory movement emanating from the West and fostering radical politics elsewhere in the world. Such a view is not only ethnocentric but, critically, it fails to engage with the complex ways in which feminist politics travel and are evinced in specific localities. In this article, I seek to understand how marginalized women in the “Global South” – particularly in …
