The Social Impact of the 2008 Global Economic Crisis on Neighborhoods, Households, and Individuals in Turkey
Economic Crisis and Marital Problems in Turkey
This paper applied the family stress model to the case of Turkey in the wake of the 2001 economic crisis. Using structural equation modeling and a nationally representative urban sample of 711 married women and 490 married men, we tested whether economic hardship and the associated family economic strain on families resulted in greater marital problems. Our results showed a modified family stress model applies to Turkey. In contrast to most previ…
Religiosity, the headscarf, and education in Turkey
Previous research highlights the continuing relevance of family culture in explaining educational inequalities in Turkey, especially patriarchal beliefs and practices that discourage investment in the education of girls. We extend that research by introducing two much‐debated, but empirically untested, aspects of family culture – parental religiosity and headscarf preferences. An analysis of a nationally representative sample of 15–19 year olds i…
Unemployment, Economic Strain and Family Distress
This essay focuses on economic hardship in the wake of the 2001 economic crisis and the impact of the resulting economic strain on individual and family distress (i.e., stress, emotional distress, physical health, and marital problems). Previous research on the impact of the economic crisis in Turkey has relied on small and non-representative samples or was limited to descriptive analyses. This research analyzes a nationally representative sample…
Gender Inequality in Schooling
Drawing on recent research on education in developing countries, this article examines gender inequality in schooling in Turkey. Using a nationally representative sample of Turkish youths, it assesses the effects of macrostructure, family resources, and cultural attitudes and practices on primary and postprimary school attainment. The results show that while locality, family resources, and family structure and culture influence the education of b…

Intergenerational Financial Support among Whites, African Americans, and Latinos
Recent empirical research has found that interhousehold exchanges of goods and services are more frequent among Whites than among African Americans or Latinos. This study explores racial and ethnic differences in kin support and focuses on financial support that adult children receive from their parents. We decompose the observed group differences in the incidence of adult children's receiving assistance into those explained by behavioral pattern…

Sharing household tasks in the United States and Sweden
Using Kohn's resocialization theory in a marital power framework, this research explores two factors that might change the traditional division of labor at home: a wife's decision‐making at work and her income. Using ordinary least squares regression analysis, the research reveals that when wives have decision‐making responsibility at work, their husband share more of the domestic chores. These results, although based on cross‐sectional data, sho…
