  • Attuned visibility and the ambiguity of demanding public spaces in Copenhagen

Schwabe, Siri Schwabe et al.•ARTICLE•The Senses and Society•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

Based on ethnographic data and mapping exercises, this article explores North West Park in Copenhagen, Denmark and asks how lighting forms perceptions of urban space. The park was inaugurated in the late 2000s and has been praised for its bold landscape and lighting design. However, it was received in more ambiguous ways by users, explaining their experience of it in words such as “magical” and “kitsch.” This ambiguity highlights how current urba…

  • A Heritage of Otherness

    Schwabe, Siri Schwabe•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 26

In this article I explore the relationship between heritage, difference, and urban development. More specifically, I present a case study of the barrio of Patronato in Santiago de Chile and show how its heritage of otherness simultaneously situates the neighbourhood on the fringes of the city and plays into the neoliberal logic of its developmental trajectory. I argue that Patronato works as a post-dictatorial memory haunt frequented by a past th…

    Jeremy Payne-Frank, Jeremy Hektor Payne-Frank et al.•ARTICLE•Architecture and Culture•2022

In this article, we explore the Oslo Opera House (OOH) as an example of contemporary Nordic architecture and interrogate its purported openness through an atmospheric lens. Our study is based on extensive fieldwork and unfolds using three interconnecting generator…

    Open Access•Schwabe, Siri Schwabe•ARTICLE•Interventions•2018

In this essay I explore the relationship between diasporic Palestinian memory and the politics of forgetting in post-dictatorship Chile. Drawing on ethnographic material from long-term fieldwork in Santiago, I argue that dual processes of remembrance and forgetting are central to a diasporic Palestinian politics that hinges on ideas of resistance and that always refers to the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people, but that is also located wi…

This article explores the relationship between soccer and diasporic resistance through an examination of Club Deportivo Palestino, a professional football club based in Santiago de Chile. The first ‘Club Sportivo Palestina’ was founded by Palestinian immigrants in the Chilean capital in 1916. Currently, Palestino plays in the Chilean first division and is among the top teams in the country. Meanwhile, the club is often claimed to represent the Pa…
