  • Welfare States

    Open Access•Charles R Atherton, Charles Atherton•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Administration•2002•Citada por: 1

The article, “States of welfare: a conceptual challenge” (Veit–Wilson 2000) has received considerable attention. Charles R Atherton•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1989•Citada por: 1

The welfare states of North America and Western Europe have seen slower growth and even cutbacks during the 1970s and 1980s. Critics on the Right blame the faulty ideology behind "social engineering." The Left points to the fundamental incompatibility of the welfare ideology with capitalism. I argue that the slowdown in growth is a decision made by the middle of the political spectrum. Conservative and moderate political victories of the period h…

  • The Social Assignment of Social Work

    Charles R Atherton•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1969•Citada por: 3

Social work is defined as the technology which has been given the responsibility for the control of dependency. "Dependency" is defined as a state of being in which one is not able to function in his various social roles using resources that he currently has available to him. Using the framework of social systems theory, this paper sees the major function of social work as the provision of interventive services at the level of the social system a…
