  • Reflecting on archaeology and the understanding of Song of Songs

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2022

The question of archaeology corroborating any ‘historical information’ is excluded from the outset by the poetic genre of Song of Songs. This contribution therefore focusses on archaeology’s more modest purpose as far as its relationship with texts is concerned, namely whether it can facilitate the understanding of the text by investigating the material culture that features in Song of Songs. Archaeology is therefore understood in terms of its mo…

  • Jurie le Roux

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2019•Referências: 4

In this article, Jurie Hendrik le Roux’s contribution to the theological endeavour is explored. His wide interdisciplinary interest that bears fruit in various fields of his work proved (at least in his case) that the adage ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’ is invalid. His research in sociology, Church history and philosophy will be discussed in so far as it contributed to his main interest, Old Testament Studies. In what follows, I will th…

  • The poor in the Psalms

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

Since the psalms are religious, poetic, existential expressions of life, entailing both extreme joy and intense suffering, it stands to reason that poverty (in its literal sense and otherwise) would receive considerable attention. Focussing on material poverty and challenging the idea of a homogeneous view on poverty (e.g. Armenfr mmigkeit) in the psalms, the diversity of views on poverty in the psalms is explored. Attention is paid to YHWH or Go…

  • Of poverty prevention in the Pentateuch as a continuing contemporary challenge

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2013•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

This article surveyed how the theme of poverty and caring for the poor functions in the Pentateuch in its legal as well as narrative sections. It included the discussion of a (hopefully) representative selection of texts where the various Hebrew terms (ani or anw, ebjon and dal) are employed, but also where they are absent but the issue is present. Attention is (amongst others) paid to the goodness of creation as counter-pole for poverty in Genes…

  • Deuteronomium 15

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2008

Poverty is a problem of both the present day and the ancient world. Endeavouring to draw inspiration from the ancient text of Deuteronomy 15:1-18 to benefit the eradication of poverty today, attention is given in this article to the contexts of the ancient text as well as the context of today. In view of the available resources in the world, it is concluded that through a re-appropriation of the basic values undergirding the biblical text and app…

  • Jung, the Pentateuch and ethics

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2004•Referências: 2

This article reflects on the contribution that can be made to the interpretation of the Bible by employing the analytical psychology of Carl Jung. After some relevant biographical considerations on Jung, his view of religion and the Bible is briefly considered, followed by a look into Genesis 1-3 in terms of his distinction of archetypes. It is suggested in the conclusion that Jungian psychological Biblical criticism can lead to a changed, but fr…

  • Verskillende boodskappe vir verskillende kontekste

    Open Access•Eben Scheffler•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•1998

DitTerent messages for ditTerent contexts: the literature of the exile (597-539 BC) In this article the biblical literature that originated in the exile is discussed. It is indicated how these different writings (Lamentations, exilic psalms, Jeremiah and his editors, Obadiah, Ezekiel, the Priestly Writer of the Pentateuch and Deutero-Isaiah) addressed specific contingent situations within the broader context of the exile. The variegated messages …
