Not…Until across European Languages
We present a parallel corpus study on the expression of the temporal construction ‘not...until’ in a sample of European languages. We use data from the Europarl corpus and create semantic maps by multidimensional scaling, in order to analyze cross-linguistic and language-internal variation. This paper builds on formal semantic and typological work, extending it by including conditional constructions, as well as connectives of the type as long as.…
Parallel Corpus Research and Target Language Representativeness
This paper surveys the strategies that the Contrastive, Typological, and Translation Mining parallel corpus traditions rely on to deal with the issue of target language representativeness of translations. On the basis of a comparison of the corpus architectures and research designs of the three traditions, we argue that they have each developed their own representativeness strategies: (i) monolingual control corpora (Contrastive tradition), (ii) …
Temporal adverbial superlatives in Dutch
This paper investigates adverbial superlative expressions in Dutch that have a temporal interpretation, i.e. that contain the forms eerst ‘first’, laatst ‘latest’, and vroegst ‘earliest’. I focus on possessive superlatives and superlatives embedded under the preposition voor . Although both constructions contain bare superlatives and are interpreted temporally, they represent semantically and pragmatically different readings, and attach to the se…
An analysis of all -clefts
This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the semantic and syntactic properties of all-clefts (All I ate for dinner was a salad). The main characteristic of all-clefts is the inference that what is designated by the cleft is not much (the “smallness effect”). On the basis of novel observations on all-clefts with multi-clausal precopular clauses, and the interaction with negation and questions, I argue for three claims: (i) the word all is the h…
Emphatic reflexives as part-structure modifiers
The standard analysis of emphatic reflexives assumes that they are focused expressions of identity in all their uses (e.g. Gast 2006 ). On the basis of semantic and prosodic data, I argue that exclusive adverbial emphatic reflexives in Dutch and English should instead be analyzed as expressions excluding certain participants from the modified event (“P-exclusives”). The proposed analysis is based on Moltmann’s (2004) account of the part-structure…
When-questions and tense in Inquisitive Semantics
Temporal questions with when and their counterparts in other languages display tense restrictions: they are incompatible with the present tense that is interpreted as 'currently ongoing', and English when-questions are incompatible with the present perfect. The existence of tense restrictions is one of the reasons why a theory of the semantics of questions should include an account of tense and aspect. I first propose an explanation of the tense …

Clitics and Voicing in Dutch
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:This paper considers the interaction of voicing processes and clitic attachment in Dutch. This forms a challenge to phonological theories since clitic attachment shows opaque interaction with final devoicing, and in addition voice assimilation in cliticized structures is subject to variation. I propose a two-level Optimality Theory (OT) analysis (Prince and Smolensky 1993, Kiparsky 2000) of these da…
