  • The Platformized Communication of Femicide in Greece

    Open Access•Angelos Kissas, Afroditi-Maria Koulaxi•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•Referências: 16

This article enquires into the communication of femicides in Greece as a discursive struggle over the emotional and moral recognition of their victims, waged through social media platforms. It is, specifically, interested in how high-traffic Greek feminist community pages on Facebook and Instagram engaged with incidents of women killings in 2021, the year that femicide rates peaked in the country. The article suggests that these pages develop a f…

  • Platform spectacle and populism in YouTube videos of Covid-19 protests

    Open Access•Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•Discourse & Communication•2025•Referências: 10

Taking YouTube videos of COVID-19 protests as a case study, this article seeks to understand how protesting breaks into our global spaces of publicity as a platform spectacle of populism. It contextualizes research on spectacles within platform studies with an emphasis on the ritualistic orientation that social media catalyze toward content-making/sharing. It also offers an integrative approach to populism that centers on the discursive and ideol…

  • Populist everyday politics in the (mediatized) age of social media

    Open Access•Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 27

This article is interested in populism outside the master frame of institutional politics (populist parties/leaders), considering, instead, the populist potential of celebrities’ everyday politics on social media. To understand this potential, the article suggests, we need to understand how celebrities are compelled by today’s mediatized communicative ecosystem to perform themselves as ordinary advocates for people-victims. We need to examine how…

  • Performative and ideological populism

    Open Access•Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2019•Citada por: 22•Referências: 19

Taking Donald Trump’s and Jeremy Corbyn’s use of Twitter as paradigmatic case studies, this article demonstrates that the charismatic leader features as a distinct mode of the performativity of populism. Particularly, the leader is performed as a persona, such as Trump’s ‘defiant’ and Corbyn’s ‘ordinary’ persona, which authentically embodies the mission to save the people from their own enemies, in this case, the mission of national palingenesis …

  • Making sense of political ideology in mediatized political communication

    Open Access•Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 40

Political discourse becomes more and more ‘mediatized’ nowadays but, as I argue in this article, mediatization should be considered neither as a testament to ‘de-ideologization’ nor as a restyling of the ‘inherently ideological’ contemporary political communication. Ideology, I claim, is a potentiality of mediatized political discourse and as such, it rests with the generic capacity of the latter to recontextualize symbolisms from the institution…

  • The communication of horrorism

Lilie Chouliaraki, Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Mass…•2018•Citada por: 15•Referências: 4

In this article, the authors theorize the communicative logic of ISIS online death videos-from the burning and shooting of individual hostages to mass battleground executions. Drawing on Adriana Cavarero's reflections on contemporary violence, they demonstrate how ISIS' digital spectacles of the annihilated body confront Western viewers with horror- or rather with different "regimes of horrorism" (grotesque, abject and sublime horror). These spec…

  • Ideology in the age of mediatized politics

    Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2017•Citada por: 3•Referências: 10

Mediatized politics is often associated with a metamorphosis of politics; a shift from philosophical fermentations to effective media campaigning and from rational argumentation to personal appeals, sound-bites and dramatic effects. The question this article raises is whether this alleged metamorphosis allows some space for ideology to emerge and play any role in contemporary politics and, if so, what the implications for the study of political i…

  • Political Advertising in the Crossroad of Political Pragmatism and Political Ideology

    Open Access•Angelos Kissas•ARTICLE•Online Journal of Communication…•2015

The study of political advertising so far could be an exemplar of the schism that permeates the whole study of political communication nowadays; the schism between the politics of pragmatism and the politics of ideology. This paper comes to counter-argue that the study of political advertising can become an exemplar of the reconciliation of these two different areas of concern in so far as we do justice to the ontological status of discourse in p…
