Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia
Scaling Evidence-Based Interventions to Improve the Cardiovascular Health of People With Serious Mental Illness
People with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) experience excess mortality, driven in large part by high rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with all cardiovascular disease risk factors elevated. Interventions designed to improve the cardiovascular health of people with SMI have been shown to lead to clinically significant improvements in clinical trials; however, the uptake of these interventions into real-life clinical settings remains limited.…
Impacts of Neighborhood Characteristics and Surgical Treatment Disparities on Overall Mortality in Stage I Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients
Racial/ethnic minority groups in the United States have high renal cell carcinoma (RCC) mortality rates. This study assessed surgical treatment disparities across racial/ethnic groups and impacts of neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics on surgical treatments and overall mortality. Stage I RCC patients diagnosed between 2004 and 2016 from National Cancer Database were included (n = 238,141). We assessed differences in associations between ra…
Physical Activity Levels and Screen Time among Youth with Overweight/Obesity Using Mental Health Services
Youth with mental illness have higher levels of obesity than children in the general population. Both regular physical activity and limited screen time have been recommended to reduce and prevent childhood obesity. This study examines accelerometer-based moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and screen time among youth with overweight/obesity issues who are receiving mental health care. This study looked at a 12-month weight management rando…
Complex Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Sources of Inflammation in Schizophrenia
A low level, inflammatory phenotype is prevalent in individuals with schizophrenia, but the source of this inflammation is not known. Studies of the gut-brain axis indicate that this inflammation may be related to the translocation of intestinal microbes across a permeabilized gut-vasculature barrier. In addition, studies of the endocrine system support that this inflammation may derive from effects of stress hormones and metabolic imbalances. Ga…
Need for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Persons With Serious Mental Illness
Persons with serious mental illness (SMI) comprise a high-risk group for cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality with rates at least twice those of the overall US. Potentially modifiable CVD risk behaviors (tobacco smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet) and risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia) are all markedly elevated in persons with SMI. Evaluations of programs implementing integrated medical care into spec…
Bringing an Effective Behavioral Weight Loss Intervention for People With Serious Mental Illness to Scale
People with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) die 10-20 years earlier than the general population, mainly due to cardiovascular disease. Obesity is a key driver of cardiovascular risk in this group. Because behavioral weight loss interventions tailored to the needs of people with SMI have been shown to lead to clinically significant weight loss, achieving widespread implementation of these interventions is a public health priority. In this Perspect…
The Experience of Peer Mentors in an Intervention to Promote Smoking Cessation in Persons with Psychiatric Illness
Predictors of quality of life in type 2 diabetes patients with schizophrenia, major mood disorder, and without mental illness
The 2009 Schizophrenia Port Psychosocial Treatment Recommendations and Summary Statements
The Schizophrenia Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT) psychosocial treatment recommendations provide a comprehensive summary of current evidence-based psychosocial treatment interventions for persons with schizophrenia. There have been 2 previous sets of psychosocial treatment recommendations (Lehman AF, Steinwachs DM. Translating research into practice: the Schizophrenia Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT) treatment recommendations. Schizoph…
Physical Wellness and Employment Status Among Adults with Serious Mental Illness
Women, Aging, and Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder of unknown etiology that typically has an onset in early adulthood and persists for the remainder of the lifespan. For most affected individuals, the illness is recurrent with psychotic symptoms that tend to be episodic in nature. The illness has pervasive and disruptive effects on many life domains; for example, women with schizophrenia are less likely to marry, bear children, and raise their own children …
Somatic Healthcare Utilization Among Adults With Serious Mental Illness Who Are Receiving Community Psychiatric Services
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Somatic health care utilization was studied among individuals with serious mental illness who were receiving community-based psychiatric services. RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: A total of 200 outpatients, 100 with schizophrenia and 100 with affective disorder, were recruited from randomly selected samples receiving care at two psychiatric centers. MEASURES: Patients were interviewed using questions from n…
