  • Humans take control of fire-driven diversity changes in Mediterranean Iberia’s vegetation during the mid–late Holocene

    Open Access•Simon Connor, Boris Vannière et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 4•Referências: 39

Fire regime changes are considered a major threat to future biodiversity in the Mediterranean Basin. Such predictions remain uncertain, given that fire regime changes and their ecological impacts occur over timescales that are too long for direct observation. Here we analyse centennial- and millennial-scale shifts in fire regimes and compositional turnover to track the consequences of fire regime shifts on Mediterranean vegetation diversity. We e…

    Open Access•Edward A D Mitchell, Richard J Payne et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Peatlands are widely exploited archives of paleoenvironmental change. We developed and compared multiple transfer functions to infer peatland depth to the water table (DWT) and pH based on testate amoeba (percentages, or presence/absence), bryophyte presence/absence, and vascular plant presence/absence data from sub-alpine peatlands in the SE Swiss Alps in order to 1) compare the performance of single-proxy vs. multi-proxy models and 2) assess th…

A massive tufa complex in the lower Lorze Valley (550 m a.s.l., north-central Switzerland) formed between 9000 and 5000 cal. yr BP. In the plain 4 km southeast of the complex lies Neugrundmoor (830 m a.s.l.), a mire in the hydrologic recharge area of the springs responsible for the tufa formation. Here we address an earlier, untested hypothesis that the transition of Neugrundmoor from fen to raised bog caused the end of the tufa formation, by mea…

  • Estimating pollen diversity from pollen accumulation rates

    Open Access•Willem O Van Der Knaap•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2009•Citada por: 2

A new method is presented to estimate pollen diversity on the basis of pollen-accumulation rates, rather than on a constant count of pollen as is traditional. Accumulation-based estimates of pollen diversity can be interpreted in terms of taxonomic richness on the landscape. The traditionally used constant-count estimates, on the other hand, reflect the evenness in the vegetation much more than its taxonomic richness, but they reflect this in a d…

    Open Access•Michael Wehrli, Edward A D Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Referências: 11

  • From early pollen trapping experiments to the Pollen Monitoring Programme

Pollen monitoring has become a standard investigation method for researchers in several disciplines; among them are Quaternary palynologists, who conduct experiments in order to gain insights that will help to interpret the content of pollen in sediments. A review of the literature shows how these experiments diversified during the 1920s and 1930s with an array of different research questions, ranging from pollination biology to hay fever studies…

The name Sheila Hicks is for many palaeoecologists connected with pollen trapping and absolute pollen deposition, and it is therefore an enormous pleasure to dedicate this special issue of Vegetation History and Archaeobotany to Sheila Hicks on the occasion of her retirement from Oulu University. Over the years Sheila’s enthusiasm for pollen trapping has inspired many graduate students as well as junior and senior colleagues and friends. Sheila s…

  • Variation in annual pollen accumulation rates of Fagus along a N–S transect in Europe based on pollen traps

Open Access•Irena Agnieszka Pidek, Hélèna Svobodova et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Citada por: 7•Referências: 8

Annual pollen-accumulation rates (PAR) of Fagus (beech) obtained within the framework of the Pollen Monitoring Programme (PMP) were analyzed in pollen traps along a N–S transect from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea in different European vegetation units. The study regions are situated in the lowlands of northern Poland, the uplands of SE Poland, the Czech Krkonoše Mts, the Czech Šumava Mts, the Swiss Jura Mts, the Swiss Alps, the Bulgarian Rila M…

  • Annual pollen traps reveal the complexity of climatic control on pollen productivity in Europe and the Caucasus

    Open Access•Willem O Van Der Knaap, Jacqueline F N Van Leeuwen et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Citada por: 16•Referências: 7

Annual PAR (pollen accumulation rates; grains cm−2 year−1) were studied with modified Tauber traps situated in ten regions, in Poland (Roztocze), the Czech Republic (two regions in Krkonoše, two in Šumava), Switzerland (4 regions in the Alps), and Georgia (Lagodekhi). The time-series are 10–16 years long, all ending in 2007. We calculated correlations between pollen data and climate. Pollen data are PAR summarized per region (4–7 traps selected p…

  • Comparing pollen spectra from modified Tauber traps and moss samples

    Open Access•Heather S Pardoe, Thomas Giesecke et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2010•Citada por: 19•Referências: 2

This paper compares pollen spectra derived from modified Tauber traps and moss samples from a selection of woodland types from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Poland, Switzerland and Wales. The study examines the representation of individual taxa in the two sampling media and aims to ascertain the duration of pollen deposition captured by a moss. The latter aim was pursued through the calculation of dissimilarity indexes to assess …

  • The performance of single- and multi-proxy transfer functions (testate amoebae, bryophytes, vascular plants) for reconstructing mire surface wetness and pH

  • Towards mapping the late Quaternary vegetation change of Europe

    Open Access•Thomas Giesecke, Basil Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2013•Citada por: 21•Referências: 15

The number of well-dated pollen diagrams in Europe has increased considerably over the last 30 years and many of them have been submitted to the European Pollen Database (EPD). This allows for the construction of increasingly precise maps of Holocene vegetation change across the continent. Chronological information in the EPD has been expressed in uncalibrated radiocarbon years, and most chronologies to date are based on this time scale. Here we …
