Health Impact of Climate Change on Older Adults Living With Dementia
Relatively little is known about the association between climate change, climate variability, weather, and health among older adults living with dementia, who face heightened risks. Our aim was to conduct a scoping review of the global published literature regarding the effects of climate change, climate variability, and weather on emergency department visits, hospitalizations, falls, morbidity, and mortality among older adults (≥ 65 years) livin…

Increased prevalence of loneliness and associated risk factors during the Covid-19 pandemic
As has been noted for various other outcomes, the pandemic did not impact all subgroups of the population in the same way with respect to loneliness. Our results suggest that public health measures aimed at reducing loneliness during a pandemic should incorporate multifactor interventions fostering positive health behaviours and consider targeting those at high risk for loneliness
World guidelines for falls prevention and management for older adults
BACKGROUND: falls and fall-related injuries are common in older adults, have negative effects on functional independence and quality of life and are associated with increased morbidity, mortality and health related costs. Current guidelines are inconsistent, with no up-to-date, globally applicable ones present. OBJECTIVES: to create a set of evidence- and expert consensus-based falls prevention and management recommendations applicable to older a…
Symptoms of depression and anxiety, and unmet healthcare needs in adults during the Covid-19 pandemic
The presence of depression and anxiety symptoms were strongly associated with perceived unmet healthcare needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interventions to improve healthcare access for adults with depression and anxiety during the pandemic may be necessary
Levels of Depression and Anxiety Among Informal Caregivers During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The findings shed light on the change in mental health among informal caregivers during the outset of the pandemic. The demonstrated associations between studied variables and mental health among informal caregivers provide empirical evidence for intervention programs aiming to support caregivers, particularly those who are female, and providing intensive care at home
Predictors of reported alcohol intake during the first and second waves of the Covid-19 pandemic in Canada among middle-aged and older adults
Factors predictive of potentially worrisome alcohol use (i.e. increased intake, binge drinking) included younger age, sex, greater education and income, living alone, cannabis use, and worse mental health. Some of these factors were also associated with decreased intake, but the magnitudes of associations were smaller. This information may help direct screening efforts and interventions towards individuals at risk for problematic alcohol intake d…

The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) was established to understand and address the needs of an aging population.1–3 Overall aims are to examine aging as a dynamic process; to investigate the inter-relationship among intrinsic and extrinsic factors from mid-life to older age; and to capture the transitions, trajectories and profiles of aging.4 A central objective in creating the CLSA was to provide national infrastructure and build capa…
The Incremental Health Care Costs of Frailty Among Home Care Recipients With and Without Dementia in Ontario, Canada
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated the incremental 1-year direct costs of health care associated with frailty among home care recipients in Ontario with and without dementia. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of 159,570 home care clients aged 50 years and older in Ontario, Canada in 2014/2015. At index home care assessment, we ascertained dementia status using a validated algorithm and frailty level (robust, prefrail, frail) based on th…
Assessing the measurement properties of a Frailty Index across the age spectrum in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging
The FI is a feasible method to evaluate frailty and capture frailty-related heterogeneity in populations aged 45-85 years. In this study, the FI had good construct validity in middle-aged and older adults, showing expected correlations with sociodemographic factors consistently across age groups. This method can be easily reproduced in similar datasets, making the FI a generalisable instrument
Bringing a population-environment perspective to hazards research
The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)
Identifying Potentially Avoidable Hospital Admissions From Canadian Long-Term Care Facilities
BACKGROUND: The provision of preventive services and continuity of care are important aspects of long-term care (LTC). A proposed quality indicator of such care is the rate of hospitalizations due to ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs). As the ACSC approach to identifying potentially avoidable hospitalizations (PAH) was developed for younger community-dwelling adults in the United States, we sought to examine its applicability as a quali…
Venerable or vulnerable
An underappreciated aspect of The lord of the rings (TLOTR) by JRR Tolkien is in how the author dealt with death, longevity and ageing in the work. During his early years, Tolkien endured first the passing of both parents and then the deaths of most of his friends during the First World War. It was not surprising that a search for the meaning of life and death became a preoccupation of Tolkien. Tolkien's Roman Catholic faith underpinned his thoug…

Vulnerabilities and risks in population and environment studies
Towards an interdisciplinary conceptualisation of vulnerability
Each discipline uses uncertainty in different ways. This paper reviews the range of definitions and methodologies used by researchers to approach vulnerability in the search for an interdisciplinary conceptualisation. Two themes (poverty, exclusion and marginalisation on the one hand, and society–environment interactions on the other) are used to explore the authors' conceptualisation of vulnerability. The paper points towards possible convergenc…
Mobilidade populacional, sustentabilidade ambiental e vulnerabilidade social
Embora a gr…
Health, Function and Survival of a Cohort of Very Old Canadians
