Improvements in self-acceptance for LGBTQ+ and straight allied youth and young adults enrolled in an affirming system of care program
How the U.S.-Mexico border influences adolescent substance use
Improving Student Learning Outcomes through Community-based Research
Engaged learning extends education outside of the formal classroom through internships, experiential learning, and community- or service-based learning. To better understand the potential of engaged learning in improving student learning outcomes and encouraging students to pursue STEM-based careers, we describe the development of a community-based research experience related to poverty and report on improvements in students’ self-reported compet…
Intimate attachments and migrant deportability
Nicholas De Genova (2002) suggests that undocumented status is primarily experienced through consciousness of being deportable. Interviews with undocumented Mexican migrant women living in Arizona show that they experience deportability not just in workplaces, which have been the focus of much scholarship, but also when seeking healthcare benefits for their U.S. citizen children. This article therefore expands the scholarship on deportability by …
Intergenerational Trauma Among Substance-Using Native American, Latina, and White Mothers Living in the Southwestern United States
The high rates of traumatic experiences reported by women who use alcohol and drugs have been documented in the literature. This study builds on the existing literature by examining the experiences of intergenerational family loss trauma among 226 mothering female substance users from 3 racial and ethnic groups: Native American (26.5%), Latina (24.8%), and White (48.7%). Demographic information, substance use, intergenerational exposure to mother…
Preventing Pregnancy or Supporting Students? Learning From the Stories of Young Mothers
Informing sexuality education through youth-generated anonymous questions
This paper examines a comprehensive sexuality education programme, Health Education for Youth (HEY), which incorporates anonymous questions about sex and sexuality that participating youth generate into the curriculum. HEY utilises a social ecology framework, decolonising perspectives and feminist methods to inform the programme, its facilitation and the incorporation of participant questions into the curriculum. This paper describes the theoreti…
Chasing Sexual Orientation
This research investigated the utility of single-indicator measures of sexual orientation in examining group differences. Adolescents and young adults reported their sexual orientations, preferences, and partners. Results indicate that, (a) depending on the measure of sexual orientation, 10% to 22% cannot be categorized into a sexual orientation group using a single-indicator measure; (b) self-identified sexual orientation is often incongruent wi…
Outcomes of a Trauma-Informed Arizona Family Drug Court
Family Drug Courts (FDC) support parents' reunification efforts by providing case management aimed at cross-agency collaborations. Innovatively, the Pima County FDC includes trauma-specific treatment provided concurrently with alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment. This study examines outcomes including AOD use, mental health, education and employment involvement, housing stability, and reunification of 121 FDC participants who completed baselin…
A Comparison of Victimization and Perpetration of Intimate Partner Violence Among Drug Abusing Heterosexual and Lesbian Women
Women and Substance Abuse
Historically, data has shown that a smaller percentage of women use alcohol and illicit substances compared to men, and that frequency of use has been lower among women compared to use among men. Although this data on usage may be true, researchers also acknowledge that substance use among women has been a hidden issue, one not realistically acknowledged by society, especially prior to the mid-1960s. Along with this, more recent data indicates th…
The Seven Challenges
Recent developments in the provision of the substance abuse treatment for adolescents has included a focus on age appropriate treatment with consideration for adolescents' relatively low level of motivation for treatment and high incidence of co-occurring substance use and mental health problems. This study examines 3- and 6-month substance use and mental health outcomes for youth (n = 36) participating in The Seven Challenges Program. Results in…
Gender Difference in Substance Use, Mental Health, and Criminal Justice Involvement of Adolescents at Treatment Entry and at Three, Six, 12 and 30 Month Follow-Up
Many adolescents entering substance abuse treatment have coexisting mental health problems and are criminally involved. Examination of the complexities of substance use, mental health, and criminal justice involvement along with changes in these issues following treatment is needed. This study includes 941 males and 266 females enrolled in seven drug treatment programs located in geographically diverse areas of the United States. Comparisons betw…
HIV Drug and Sex Risk Behaviors Among American Indian and Alaska Native Drug users
Little research has been conducted on HIV drug and sex risk behaviors of American Indians and Alaska Natives who use illicit drugs. Data from studies conducted with other ethnic groups indicates differences in HIV drug and sex risk behaviors of men and women and between drug users from different regions, cities, communities, and intervention sites. This study examines whether these differences in HIV drug and sex risk behaviors also exist for Ame…
Theoretical Models Used to Guide Nida's Cooperative Agreement Research and Intervention Efforts
NIDA's Cooperative Agreement program to reach out-of-treatment drug users and provide HIV prevention to reduce HIV drug and sexual risks was initiated in September of 1990. By August, 1994 the program included 23 sites which used various theoretical models to guide prevention strategies, add conceptual coherence to many aspects of behavior change, and allow for clearer interpretation of why behavior change occurs. This article reviews the theoret…
A Therapeutic Community for Substance-Abusing Pregnant Women and Women with Children
The fact that women of childbearing age make up a large proportion of the alcohol and other drug using population has gained national attention. Since treatment for addicted pregnant women and women with children has become a federal priority, treatment programs of various modalities have opened their doors to this population. One promising treatment modality is the therapeutic community (TC). This article briefly describes Amity, a TC for women …
