The Institutionalization of Symbolic Interactionism in Canadian Sociology, 1922-1979
This essay examines the growth of symbolic interactionism (SI) as a specialization in English-language Canadian sociology, 1922-1979. We do not focus on theoretical and/or methodological developments. Rather, we document three empirical indicators of the institutionalization of SI: faculty members hired, research published, and SI-receptive programs established. We find that Canadian sociologists institutionalized SI in two phases. From 1922 to 1…
Building the New Jerusalem in Canada’s Green and Pleasant Land”
According to the conventional account of the history of English-Canadian sociology, the discipline was established in the 1920s at McGill, followed by developments at Dalhousie, Toronto and elsewhere. I dispute this account by documenting the substantial institutional footprint of so-called “social gospel” sociology in Canada’s Protestant universities and religious colleges, 1889-1921: courses taught; faculty appointments made; programs establish…
Engaged, Practical Intellectualism
The debate initiated by Michael Burawoy’s 2004 Presidential Address to the American Sociological Association, “For Public Sociology,” has been a ‘public good’ (2005a; see also 2004abc, 2005bcdefg, 2006, 2007abc, 2008). Burawoy provoked sociologists around the world into revisiting the fundamental question “What is the nature and purpose of the discipline?”, and the variety of responses they have crafted is remarkable. Whatever the views individua…
The concept of social class
In French Canada in Transition (1943) and a set of related essays written between 1933 and 1941, Everett Hughes, a key figure in the "Second Chicago School" of sociology developed a novel and noteworthy conceptualization of social class. This contribution, which was not recognized outside of French-language sociology in Quebec, was an integral element of Hughes's "interpretive institutional ecology" theoretical frame of reference. It combined ele…

Canadian Sociology's First Textbook
A neglected classic
In and Out of Work: A Survey of Econo…
From Universal History to Historical Sociology
Hobhouse twice removed’
The Image of Inequality in S. D. Clark's Writings on Pioneer Canadian Society
A Dualistic Vision
Although struggle, domination, competition, and hierarchy were central concerns of Robert Park and the human ecologists during the 1920s and 1930s, they did not specifically set out to articulate a comprehensive theory of social inequality in their work. Indeed, the period of Chicago school dominance has been portrayed by some analysts as one during which sociologists for the most part ignored the study of social inequality. This article suggests…
