Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic condition that affects only girls and women, leading to health issues including infertility. Patients usually require recombinant growth hormone, and sex hormone therapy. Based on our anthropological research in Poland, we posit questions regarding the management of societal expectations by female parents regarding the femininity of their daughters, especially within the context of infertility. We query: Is it po…

  • Tactile Crease

    Open Access•Ewa Maciejewska-Mroczek•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Europaea•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 19

In Poland, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is often a contested procedure, as it is not accepted by Catholic bioethics. This rejection mobilizes a wide range of views and arguments about IVF, some of which circulate only in the local discourse. A very potent local concept is the “tactile crease” (bruzda dotykowa) that is said to mark the foreheads of children conceived with IVF. This term, coined in 2013 by a priest who is also a professor of law, r…

In this country where Catholicism is the dominant religion, attitudes towards in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and, more generally, assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are clearly mirroring and reproducing the nation’s values. Based on official church teachings, the “IVF child” is a new subject of concern. Research conducted with children who were conceived in this mann…

A very strong voice in the debate has Catholic Church, whic…
