    Between 1749 and 1865 the deaths of some 889,400 infants below the age of one year were registered in Finland. Set against the 4,457,400 live births for the same period this results in a rate of infant mortality approaching 200, which means that on average one out of every five children died before its first birthday.     In this paper the development of fertility and mortality in Finland, and their interrelations with each other and with economic factors is discussed. An analysis by individual years shows that rises and falls in mortality and fertility rates did not always coincide with poor and good harvests.     The paper deals with regional differences in Finnish death rates for the period 1749-1773 and the reasons for these differences. A sample was taken consisting of 51 rural parishes, eight urban parishes and three deaneries and representing 18.3 per cent of all deaths in Finland over the 25-year period.     The overall number of deaths in Finland between 1816 and 1865 was 1,893,000. Their regional distribution is the subject of this article. The first division that needs to be made is between rural districts and towns: rural districts are again sub-divided into 43 deaneries; there were 29 towns in 1815 and 32 in 1866.
