Attitudes Toward Active Minorities
Evidence has shown that rights‐claiming initiatives by disadvantaged groups can elicit negative (reactionary) responses from the advantaged. The present work analyzes the effect of rights‐claiming initiatives of a disadvantaged minority group (Moroccan immigrants) on the stereotypes, emotions, behavioral intentions, and support for collective actions manifested by the advantaged majority group (Spaniards) toward them. Following a mixed‐methods se…

Does Migration Lead to Acculturation of Gender-Related Attitudes? Gender Stereotypes, Perceived Gender Inequality, and Support for Collective Actions Toward Gender Equality
This study examines whether residing in a more gender-equal country (Spain) influences Romanian immigrants’ gender-related attitudes. Participants (N=572; 202 Romanian immigrants, 187 Spaniards, 183 Romanians) completed an online questionnaire. Results show that, compared to Romanians, immigrants perceived: a) agentic roles in the household as less traditional and, in turn, attributed men more immorality; b) communal roles in the household as les…
Effects of Attractiveness and Occupation Type on Attitudes toward Working Women and Men
Extending previous research, we analyzed across two preregistered studies (N = 761) the differences in cognitive evaluations, emotional reactions, and behavioral intentions depending on the physical attractiveness (low vs. high) of a potential coworker (woman or men), which applies for a gender-neutral job (Study 1) or a male-typed occupation (Study 2). Studies 1 and 2 showed that attractiveness mainly influenced participants’ attitudes toward fe…
Voices and experiences of Moroccan-heritage women and men in Spain
Although gender differences need additional clarification, these findings advance our theoretical knowledge about the sources of shared grievances among disadvantaged group members and the role of metadehumanization in their affective reactions to injustice. Interventions are urgent to address metadehumanization and canalize its affective consequences to promote social change. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
Lights and shadows of counter-attitudinal strategies to reduce prejudice
Two preregistered experiments compared the effect of a counter-attitudinal strategy with a control and a reflective condition (Experiment 1, n = 689) or an outgroup-variability condition (Experiment 2, n = 634) on attitudes toward Moroccan immigrants in Spain, exploring the role of identity threat in the process among participants with high (vs. low) racism and ethnocultural empathy. Results showed that the exposure to counter-attitudinal content…
To be or not to be egalitarian, that is the question
The expression of prejudice has mutated over the last century, and most Western countries now legally support equality. However, for ethnic minorities, work discrimination is one of the most evident challenges they have to face. Three preregistered experiments, with an overall sample of 1,507 participants, analyzed the effect of a job applicant’s ethnicity and other characteristics (e.g., gender, attractiveness), which were manipulated with a CV,…
Achieving Equality or Persisting Inequality
Looking beyond hours of care
This article advances understanding of the unpaid care–paid work nexus for carers of a person with a disability or illness, or a frail older relative. It examines the relationship between care intensity (measured in terms of both care hours and care strain) and withdrawal from work (measured in terms of both withdrawal of time spent in paid work and withdrawal from career development and progression). The analysis reveals that care strain has a s…
How do adolescents perceive Chinese and Romanian immigrants? Testing the extended stereotype content model (¿Cómo perciben los adolescentes a los inmigrantes de origen chino y rumano? Una prueba del m…
This study assessed Spanish adolescents’ ( N = 296) stereotypes of morality, sociability and competence and their emotions towards Romanian ( n = 147) or Chinese immigrants ( n = 149). We also assessed the perceived intergroup competition with these groups and their perceived social status, and we explored the relation of these variables with adolescents’ stereotypes and emotions. As expected, adolescents’ evaluations were influenced by the ethni…
Gender equality and paid parental leave in Australia
The year 2020 marks the 10th anniversary of the Australian Paid Parental Leave Act 2010. Using Baird’s orientations typology and Brighouse and Wright’s equality framework, with evidence from the Workplace Agreements Database and the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, this article assesses changes in policy, bargaining and company provisions over the decade. We find that policy changes may enable more fathers and partners to take leave, although th…
The effect of imagined contact valence on adolescents’ and early adults’ stereotypes, emotions, and behavioral intentions toward ethnic groups
Across two experimental studies, this research examined the effects of positive and negative imagined intergroup contact on adolescents’ (Study 1, N = 124) and early adults’ (Study 2, N = 169) stereotype content, emotions, and behavioral intentions toward two immigrant groups in Spain: Ecuadorians, a valued group, and Moroccans, a devalued group. The results showed that the imagined contact valence influenced only adolescents’ outgroup evaluation…
A matter of trust”
Moroccans are still the lowest rated immigrants in Spain. This research analyses the relationships between different dimensions of stereotypes (i.e., morality, sociability, and competence), positive emotions, and facilitation behavioural tendencies between Spaniards and Moroccans. Specifically, this work aims to explore whether the three stereotype dimensions play distinct roles in predicting helping behavioural tendencies through emotions, with …
