Transactional sex is a topic within HIV research that is relatively undertheorised and lacking consensus. In this study, it is understood as the implicit, non-marital, non-commercial exchange of sex for material goods or social status, and we examine the phenomenon among youth. African immigrants have been largely excluded from research on issues confronting immigrants. This article reports the findings from a 1993 study of African immigrants in the United States. Data collected from a survey of 52 African immigrants showed significant relationships among stress, hardiness, self-esteem, spiritual well-being, and coping resources.
