“It Shouldn’t Become the Club Med of Drug Problems Here”
While harm reduction has become increasingly embedded in urban drug policy across Europe, its local implementation remains a site of tension and controversy. Despite being backed by strong public health evidence, harm reduction services (e.g., drug consumption rooms, opioid agonist treatment centers) intersect with contested urban dynamics and diverging stakeholder expectations. This study explores how harm reduction services are perceived within…
The relative value of mental health for pandemic response
Dynamics of psychological distress
Overall, these findings suggest that the variation in psychological distress between the waves was mostly influenced by social support, loneliness, and social activities, rather than by exposure to COVID-19. Mitigation policies aimed at controlling the pandemic should focus more on addressing specific individual psychosocial vulnerabilities
Acceptability of an e-mental health self-help intervention aiming to improve psychological distress among persons experiencing unstable housing in France
Psychosocial problems, daily functioning and help-seeking behaviour of international migrant workers in the Netherlands
International migrant workers (IMWs) may face insecure work and housing, limited access to healthcare and increased risk of psychological problems. Two scalable, evidence-based interventions to support individuals experiencing psychological distress are Doing What Matters in Times of Stress (DWM) and Problem Management Plus (PM+). This study aimed to explore IMWs’ problems, daily functioning and help-seeking behaviour, to inform cultural adaptati…
Psychological distress and online advice-seeking in times of Covid-19
Islands in the stream
Despite the 'Title 107' reform, persons with SUD still experience mental health care services as 'islands in the stream', pointing to several pressing priorities for future policy and practice development: breaking the vicious cycles of waiting times, organizing relational case management, tackling stigma and centralizing lived experiences, and fostering recovery-promoting collaboration

Covid-19 contact tracing at work in Belgium - how tracers tweak guidelines for the better
Our study indicates that contact tracers did not apply pre-defined criteria for classifying high and low risk contacts. Risk stratification by contact tracers predicts who is at risk of infection better than guidelines only. This result indicates that a knowledgeable tracer can target testing better than a general guideline, asking for a debate on how to adapt the guidelines
Mental health problems and needs of frontline healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic in Spain
Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) from COVID-19 hotspots worldwide have reported poor mental health outcomes since the pandemic's beginning. The virulence of the initial COVID-19 surge in Spain and the urgency for rapid evidence constrained early studies in their capacity to inform mental health programs accurately. Here, we used a qualitative research design to describe relevant mental health problems among frontline HCWs and explore their a…
Implementation of a computer-assisted face-to-face intervention for mapping the social support networks of patients with severe mental illness in routine clinical practice
BACKGROUND: Social support is a key dimension of personal recovery for patients with severe mental disorders. Although clinicians and health professionals should monitor the social support resources of patients in order to provide effective treatment, no specific tool or intervention exist for that purpose. Egonet is a computer-assisted intervention for health and social services that enables the mapping, assessment and fostering of patients' soc…
Use of generic social services and social integration of patients with a severe mental illness in Belgium
BACKGROUND: Patients with severe mental illnesses (SMI) have low levels of social integration, which could be improved if they used social services. To our knowledge, however, the extent to which they use generic social services remains unknown. AIMS: We assessed the extent to which patients with SMI use generic social services and the factors that may drive that usage. METHOD: = 517, participation rate = 53%) in 19 networks of services, covering…
Voices to be heard
These findings tie in with procedural justice theory as a precondition for family support and family recovery within forensic psychiatric care
Mental Distress and Its Contributing Factors Among Young People During the First Wave of Covid-19
Background: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and its associated measures led to high levels of mental distress in the general population. Previous research indicated that young people are especially vulnerable for a wide range of mental health problems during the pandemic, but little is known about the mechanisms. This study examined mental distress and its contributing factors among young Belgian people. Methods: An online survey wa…

Binge drinking at University
Many university students engage in risky alcohol consumption behaviour during their stay at university. So far, however, most studies have relied on cross-sectional surveys and paid little attention to the role of social ties. University students, however, are socially connected, so it is likely that their alcohol consumption behaviour is also connected. We hypothesized that university students' social positions within their networks are related …
Implementing a Nation-Wide Mental Health Care Reform
Alcohol drinking among college students
Educational and college authorities need to acknowledge universities' responsibility in relation to their students' drinking behaviour and to commit themselves to support an environment of responsible drinking
Psychiatric Advance Directives as a complex and multistage intervention
Mental health care for irregular migrants in Europe
Even in countries where access to health care is legally possible for IMs, various other barriers remain. Some of these are common to all migrants, whilst others are specific for IMs. Attempts at improving mental health care for IMs should consider barriers beyond legal entitlement, including communicating information about entitlement to mental health care professionals and patients, providing culturally sensitive care and ensuring sufficient re…
