Romanian plăcea ‘like’
In several Indo-European languages, including Romanian, predicates such as plăcea ‘like’ from Latin placēre ‘like, please’, are found selecting for a dative experiencer and a nominative stimulus, which appear to allow for two opposite, but equally neutral, word orders, i.e. dative-before-nominative and nominative-before-dative. In this article, I address the evolution of the competition between two Latin patterns, habeo and mihi est, in Romanian. As opposed to the other Romance languages, which replace the mihi est pattern with habeo in possessor and experiencer contexts, Romanian maintains both Latin patterns. This article investigates the evolution of the Romanian pattern [dative clitic + ‘ be ’ + N] (cf. Mi-e foame , lit. me .dat= is hunger, ‘I’m hungry’) from the 16th century until present-day Romanian. This pattern traces back to the Latin mihi est construction (lit. me. dat is), but is semantically more restricted than its Latin ancestor in that it can only express a physiological or psychological state.
