Studying Audiences with Sense‐Making Methodology
The field of audience or media reception studies is concerned with questions of what, when, where, how, and why people engage with media products. Across divergent fields of inquiry, research has focused on understanding how aspects of the media product, the person consuming the product, and the situation impact outcomes of reception. Amid the various options available for defining the audience and for labeling audiences on the basis of the media…
Peopling the public sphere
There are two thrusts in current debates regarding the nature of communication for the human species. These two thrusts permeate virtually every discourse whether applied to the expanding Internet, communication technologies, journalism practice, communicating in the community, or the creation of public spheres. One of these thrusts is the structural thrust. In its most extreme form, human beings and their communication worlds are enslaved and th…
Telephone Privacy
As policy-makers in various countries have turned to devising policy in the relatively unfamiliar terrain of telephone privacy, it is evident that they have done so with little empirical evidence concerning the relevant perceptions and behaviours of residential telephone users. We have two objectives. First, focusing on the US context, we seek to build on the little empirical work that has been done on these users' perceptions and behaviours rega…

Improving Predictions of Information Use
The Human Side of Information
This paper starts by contrasting two sets of assumptions about the nature of information transfer in any professional interaction. The assumptions focus on whether it is more useful practically and theoretically to treat information and its use as observer constructions (traditional assumptions) or user constructions (nontraditional assumptions). Based on this discussion, the paper tests two hypotheses drawn from nontraditional assumptions. The h…
Mass Communication Among the Urban Poor
Does a "culture of poverty" exist with respect to mass media use, and if so, does the black subculture differ from the white? This article examines the attitudes as well as the media use of three groups: a general population sample, a sample of white low-income adults, and a sample of Negro low-income adults, all drawn from Lansing, Michigan. As expected, both attitudes and behavior show strong differences by income, but little difference by race
