  • Paleoclimate and intersite correlations from Late Pleistocene/Holocene cave sites

    Open Access•Brooks B Ellwood, Francis B Harrold et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001

During the last 10 years or so, magnetic susceptibility (MS) measurements of cave sediments from archaeological sites have been used for intrasite correlation and paleoclimate estimation. This is possible, if the context is appropriate, because the MS of these sediments result from climate processes active outside caves causing variations in magnetic properties of the sediments ultimately accumulating inside of caves. Once deposited, these materi…

  • Paleoclimate Characterization and Intra-site Correlation Using Magnetic Susceptibility Measurements

    Brooks B Ellwood, Karl M Petruso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1996•Referências: 12

Magnetic susceptibility was measured for 630 samples from Holocene sediments taken from Konispol Cave, sw Albania. Comparisons between magnetic susceptibility profiles from three trenches within the cave show distinctive variations in magnetic susceptibility magnitudes and patterns that, in turn, allow direct correlations between trenches and estimates of small-scale sedimentation rate changes. Using 14C dates in conjunction with magnetic suscept…

  • Radiocarbon and archaeomagnetic dates from Konispol Cave, Albania

    Open Access•Karl M Petruso, Brooks B Ellwood et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1994•Citada por: 1•Referências: 7

Albania, isolated from Europe for nearly half a century, was closed to absolute archaeological dating during that time. New dates from an unusual large cave-site in southern Albania go beyond the single first radiocarbon date published for the country in ANTIQUITY in 1991, and permit the establishment of a radiocarbon and archaeomagnetic sequence

  • Electrical resistivity surveys as indicators of site potential

    Open Access•Brooks B Ellwood, Francis B Harrold et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1993•Citada por: 4•Referências: 6

Electrical resistivity surveys have been conducted, in conjunction with follow‐up auger and test excavations, to optimize the excavation potential within two European closed sites. The first site, Pont d'Ambon II rock shelter, is situated on the Dronne River in the Department of the Dordogne, southwestern France. It is located ∼100 m south of Pont d'Ambon I rock shelter, from which late Upper Paleolithic cultural material has been recovered. Auge…

  • Prolegomena to Late Cypriot Weight Metrology

    Karl M Petruso•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1984•Citada por: 6

The systems of weight measurement used in prehistoric Cyprus have never been studied comprehensively. The group of artifacts here examined consists of several dozen Late Bronze Age stone balance weights from Enkomi, Ayia Irini, Idalion and the Cape Gelidonya shipwreck which share a characteristic "sphendonoid" (i.e., sling bullet) shape. It is shown, using simple statistical procedures, that one system, decimal in structure, is represented in the…
