Facing Death
This study is based on my fieldwork on lived religion and beliefs among Roman Catholic native Hungarian-speakers in Harghita County, Transylvania, Romania between 1966 and 2016. In the Roman Catholic communities of my fieldsite, phenomena of modernisation and globalisation, as well as the preservation, recollection and transformation of remnants of beliefs and rituals of traditional religious communities were equally present. By exploring the com…
The World Tree of the Conquering Hungarians in the Light of Scholarly Illusions
In my paper I analyze the case of the supposed shamanistic ‘world tree’ of the conquering Hungarians: I show how this erroneous scientific construction came into being through the coming together of the mutually reinforcing mistakes of Hungarian folkloristics, linguistics, and archaeology; how manifestations of the spurious ideas of lay pseudo-science got mixed in with scientific discourse, and how they influenced the course of ‘professional’ sci…

Spirit Possession
Possession, a seemingly irrational phenomenon, has posed challenges to generations of scholars rooted in Western notions of body-soul dualism, self and personhood, and a whole set of presuppositions inherited from Christian models of possession that was “good” or “bad.” The authors of the essays in this book present a new and more promising approach. They conceive spirit possession as a form of communication, of expressivity, of culturally define…
A könyv központi témái a vallásos életstratégiák, a megélt vallás gyakorlóinak szemszögéből megközelítve. A könyv első fejezeteiben a kutat…
Shirts, Cloaks and Nudity
This study discusses the beliefs and rites related to spinning, textiles, robes, and nudity that markedly outline some coherent symbolic systems within European belief systems. Their deep structure consists in the symbolic series of oppositions of nature-culture, raw-cooked, and life-death. In this binary universe, nature is characterized by the absence of cultural processes and products: ploughing, sowing, domesticating wild animals, the furnace…
The Hungarian táltos and the shamanism of pagan Hungarians. Questions and hypotheses
One of the purposes of this study is to outline the research problem related to the wizard called táltos and a hypothesized shamanism in the pagan, pre-Christian religion of the Hungarians. Another purpose is to present the results of new research on this issue. The first part of the study is the analysis of the activities of a weather wizard called táltos from the 16th to the 21st century, as well as its related beliefs and narrative motifs. The…
Tündéresand theOrder of St Ilonaor, did the Hungarians have fairy magicians
The paper discusses the question of the existence of Hungarian fairy magicians. Fairy magicians is a term to denote magicians who sustain a mediating connection with the fairy other world. One type of Hungarian fairies, usually called a szépasszony (fair woman), is closely related to the fairy world of the Balkans. The paper also analyses the way in which fairy beliefs radiated from the Balkans toward Hungary. The question is whether along with t…
Communicating with the Spirits
Focuses on the problem of communication with the other world: the phenomenon of spirit possession and its changing historical interpretations, the imaginary schemes elaborated for giving accounts of the journeys to the other world, for communicating with the dead, and finally the historical archetypes of this kind of religious manifestation—trance prophecy, divination, and shamanism.Recognized historians and ethnologists analyze the relationship,…
Why Witches Are Women
Analyses concerning the gender of the witches in Europe in the 15th-18th centuries show an unanimous female dominance. According to European statistics - as much as it can be reconstructed from the records of the trials - the percentage of men accused of witchcraft was 80-85%. The question “why witches are women” cannot be answered with a simple explanation based on a single factor. The witch-accusations were not homogeneous at all, and, what is …
