Collaborative mapping
Environmental risks disproportionately affect socially vulnerable populations, yet most studies on urban leptospirosis have not captured residents’ perceptions of these risks. We conducted a cross-sectional study between August 2018 and March 2019 across four communities in Salvador, Brazil (Marechal Rondon, Alto do Cabrito, Nova Constituinte, and Rio Sena) using a collaborative mapping approach to explore residents’ perceptions of environmental …
Advancing Early Warning Systems for Malaria
Malaria Early Warning Systems (EWS) are predictive tools that often use climatic and other environmental variables to forecast malaria risk and trigger timely interventions. Despite their potential benefits, the development and implementation of malaria EWS face significant challenges and limitations. We reviewed the current evidence on malaria EWS, including their settings, methods, performance, actions, and evaluation. We conducted a comprehens…
Disentangling the influence of reservoir abundance and pathogen shedding on zoonotic spillover of the Leptospira agent in urban informal settlements
Rats are major reservoirs for pathogenic Leptospira , the bacteria causing leptospirosis, particularly in urban informal settlements. However, the impact of variation in rat abundance and pathogen shedding rates on spillover transmission to humans remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate how spatial variation in reservoir abundance and pathogen pressure affect Leptospira spillover transmission to humans in a Brazilian urban informal settl…
Prevalence and determinants of double and triple burden of malnutrition among mother–child pairs in Malawi
Objective: To establish the prevalence of double burden of malnutrition (DBM) and triple burden of malnutrition (TBM) among mother–child pairs in Malawi and explore their geographical distribution and associated multilevel factors. Design: Cross-sectional study using secondary data from the 2015–2016 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey using a mixed effects binomial model to identify multilevel factors associated with DBM and TBM. Georeferenced …
Evaluating the availability, accessibility, and affordability of fresh food in informal food environments in five Mexican cities
This study sheds light on the role of informal street markets in local Mexican food environments. Less is known about the availability, accessibility, and affordability of fresh food offered in these markets and their contribution to urban health in cities of the Global South in which high degrees of informality exist. We examined the impacts of informal markets on food environments in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Queretaro, and San Luis …

Neighbors’ use of water and sanitation facilities can affect children’s health
Household and neighbors' access to improve water and sanitation can affect children's health. Accounting for household WASH and herd protection in interventions' evaluation could foster stakeholders' investment and improve WASH related diseases control. Distribution of main water and sanitation facilities used during study period
Modelling geographic access and school catchment areas across public primary schools to support subnational planning in Kenya
Understanding the location of schools relative to the population they serve is important to contextualise the time, students must travel and to define school catchment areas (SCAs) for planning. We assembled a spatio-temporal database of public primary schools (PPS), population density of school-going children (SGC), and factors affecting travel in 2009 and 2020 in Kenya. We combined the assembled datasets within cost distance and cost allocation…

Defining service catchment areas in low-resource settings
Defining an accurate, representative service catchment area is important for computing population denominators for disease mapping and efficient public planning, including health, education and social care.\n \nThe growth in population settlement modelling techniques and provision of geocoded service databases has fuelled an increase in local and regional service access mapping to examine coverage and equity in much of sub-Saharan African countri…
Social and Spatial Experiences in the Cities of Tomorrow
As described by the strong academic literature, (Vattimo, Bauman, Mumford, Simon, Haraway, Meschiari, Florida) the contemporary society is going through new challenges, such as the friction between youth, technology, and productivity. These challenges affect the way people live and experience the cities, but also the way cities need to evolve. An anthological analysis and a study of secondary sources is used to analyze the new spatial and social …
Sub national variation and inequalities in under-five mortality in Kenya since 1965
Kenya has made huge progress in child survival since independence. However, U5M remains high and heterogeneous with substantial differences between counties. Better use of the current resources through focused allocation is required to achieve further reductions, reduce inequalities and increase the likelihood of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3·2 on U5M by 2030
