Chain migration hub
We develop an analytical framework of ‘chain migration hub’ through an investigation of three interconnected migration flows in China’s southwest borderland (specifically Ruili City, Yunnan Province) in the context of Belt and Road Initiative-driven industrialization and the pressures of China’s neijuan society. It examines three migration flows: the relocation of industrial capital from China’s coastal regions, the movement of immigrant labor fr…
How Chinese social workers navigate major challenges to deliver essential services on the China-Myanmar border
Infrastructural evolution
This paper theorizes the digital transformation of irregular migration as a process of infrastructural evolution, focusing on the quick surge of irregular Chinese immigrants undertaking the so-called zouxian journey to the United States via Latin America. Based on multi-sited digital ethnography and in-depth interviews, this study analyzes how social media platforms have become central to organizing, mediating, and sustaining transnational mobili…
North-seeking from the global South
This article reexamines Francis L.K. Hsu’s Under the Ancestors’ Shadow , positioning it as a critical yet underappreciated work that significantly contributes to the decolonization of anthropology. This early work confronts mainstream Eurocentric theories, such as internal other, settler colonialism, Parsonsian structural functionalism, Boasian culture-specific approaches, and the traditional village-specific, primitive society-focused lens of an…

Racialized Narratives and Structural Exclusion
Racialized exclusion of Asian entrepreneurship and its communities, as part of the entrenched systemic racism in American society, has long been promulgated by the mainstream media and policymakers. Notably, nail salons, as an Asian‐dominated multi‐billion‐dollar industry, reflect the confluence of media portrayals and policy structure of racialization. With the racial triangulation framework, we examined the news discourse of nail salons in New …
Forging citizenship in China's borderlands
This special issue reconceptualizes citizenship from the vantage point of China’s borderlands and adjacent transnational spaces. Drawing on ethnographic case studies across Ruili, Yanbian, Mohan-BoTen, northern Thailand, Kazakhstan, major Chinese cities, and customs checkpoints, eight articles examine how migrants, stateless groups, ethnic returnees, and local cadres enact, negotiate, and contest forms of belonging under conditions of legal ambig…
Refusable citizenship
This article develops the concept of refusable citizenship to analyze the lived experiences and strategic citizenship practices of stateless Myanmar Muslims in Ruili, China’s key trade hub on the China-Myanmar border. Despite their lack of legal status from either country, Myanmar Muslims have enacted layered forms of citizenship – economic, cultural, political, and transnational – through the dominance in jadeite trade, religious practices, comm…
Skill the low-skilled
This article investigates the interplay between knowledge acquisition and the stepwise migration trajectories of low-skilled Vietnamese workers in China. Utilizing a rich array of data garnered from face-to-face interviews, customized surveys, on-site observations, media narratives, and an archival review of government regulations in Guangxi—a province bordering Vietnam—and in Guangdong, a non-adjacent province, this study proposes an analytical …
From expansion to exclusion
This study examines the recalibration of local-level rural e-commerce in China's New Era political economy. Drawing on fieldwork in three Yunnan counties, this study explores the effects of recalibration on China's platform giants. We find that the dysfunctional local developmental state—shown as a shift in a diminished developmental drive mainly focused on noneconomic goals, the preferential treatment of local state-backed firms over private pla…
Embeddedness at varying depths
Using data collected from face-to-face interviews, on-site observations, and other archival records, this article builds upon the mixed embeddedness framework to develop four concepts— hyper- , hypo- , governed, and dis-embeddedness —to capture the varied depths of rural e-commerce entrepreneurs’ embeddedness within multiple levels of contexts in response to four different local politico-economic conditions in China. This study finds that entrepr…
Creating the governable population
This study interrogates how China’s ethnic minorities in a Sino-Tibetan intercultural area practice their citizenship. We build on the ideas of cultural citizenship and authoritarian citizenship to develop an analytical framework of authoritarian cultural citizenship which highlights the interactive mechanisms between the powerful Chinese state and the resilient ethnic minorities. We identify their traditional cultural citizenship practices in su…

Transnational labour contractor regime in the China-Myanmar borderland
We investigate the labour regime of an agricultural sector in the China-Myanmar borderland. The extant literature on labour generally stresses the hyper-precarity of workers, especially migrant workers. Our case study of the sugar cane cutting industry in Dragon Village, Yunnan Province, suggests that contractors who hire workers from Myanmar are also in a state of hyper-precarity which is shaped by multiple layers of socio-economic and politico-…
Gender and Transnational Dynamics in Immigrant Entrepreneurship
Immigrant enterprises, especially those in the service sector of the urban economy, are largely gendered and seemingly localized. However, the intersection of gender and transnationalism is often overlooked in the research literature. To fill this gap, we draw on the literature of mixed embeddedness and transnationalism to advance an analytical framework of simultaneous embeddedness to explain the gendered pattern of immigrant entrepreneurship. W…
Simultaneous Embeddedness in Immigrant Entrepreneurship
This article investigates how global forces influence immigrant entrepreneurship. Research in the United States generally assumes that immigrant enterprises, especially those in the service sector of the urban economy, are largely low-end and highly localized. Our case study of Chinese-owned nail salons in New York City suggests that immigrant enterprises are predominantly transnational, shaped not only by local market conditions in the host coun…
