Digital Inclusion in Old Age in Lithuania
Older adults in Lithuania are among the least technologically skilled compared to other social groups in the country and older adults in other countries. In this paper, we aim to investigate socio-demographic factors that facilitate digital inclusion in old age in Lithuania. We employ quantitative research methods and the data of the European Social Survey. We determined six significant factors of digital inclusion in old age: age, education, pla…

Role of Intergenerational Networks in the Process of Digital Inclusion of Older People in Lithuania
The disruption of the care chain
This study examined reasons for return migration among Lithuanian migrant home care workers who provided care to older adults abroad. In total, 13 interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of returnees. Using constant comparison, three major themes were identified. The first theme described the undocumented nature of the job as a reason to return. The emotional consequences of the job as well as its physically demanding aspects also were po…
Changes in Attitudes Toward Aging, Older People and Elder Care From the Perspective of Former Migrant Care Workers
Research on migrant home care workers has focused mainly on working conditions in the recipient countries and on the relationships between care recipients and their family members. However, because migrant care workers often are transnational, going back and forth between countries, some return to their home country, bringing with them newly acquired attitudes and practices. Based on a theoretical model of the transfer of innovation, this study a…
Loneliness and its Predictors in Lithuania and the European Context
Loneliness as a subjective consequence of social exclusion has a negative impact on both individual and public health, and impedes societal development. Even though Lithuania has one of the highest rates of loneliness among EU countries, it has not been closely studied. This paper presents for the first time the analysis of the prevalence and factors of loneliness in Lithuania, covering all age groups, and provides the European context. Data from…
Positioning of Childlessness
This paper focuses on childless women reflections of their current status. During the qualitative research (2017–2018), 44 interviews have been completed with 28–71 year old women without children. Based on the positioning theory (Harré et al. 2009; Allen, Wiles 2013), the paper reveals how childlessness is being positioned on different levels: personal, interpersonal and cultural. The individualistic values – freedom from the burden, taking care…
Aging identity
Dominant aging identity theories ("mask of ageing", "social mask", M.Foucault's "disembodiment thesis", gerotranscendental theory) as well as the concept of postmodern reflexive self of A.Giddens can hardly be used to explain the old age identity in contemporary Lithuania. More suitable for this purpose is E.Goffman's stigma concept that allows explaining the denial, evasion and marginalization of old age, direct and indirect age discrimination e…
Vyresnio amžiaus žmonės Lietuvos žiniasklaidoje
The world shaped by the media is taken over by its audience. The media homogenizes different views, influences age identity of individuals and attitudes towards their own and other age groups. Western research reports under-representation of elderly, especially women, and they are often portrayed negatively in physical, psychological and social sense. In this paper images of elderly in 396 publications of 2007 on the internet portal Delfi are ana…
Senstantis kūnas Lietuvos viešajame diskurse
Based on biomedical view bodily ageing in gerontology traditionally was associated with biological decline. Theorists of social gerontology recently noticed certain ambiguity of biomedical age discourses: between statements that ageing is universal, natural on one hand, and the proposed means for its 'treatment' on the other. The objective of the article is to discuss results of an investigation on representation of ageing body in Lithuanian mass…
