Divergent preferences for enhanced HIV testing options among high-risk populations in northern Tanzania
To achieve the UNAIDS target of diagnosing 95% of all persons living with HIV, enhanced HIV testing services with greater attractional value need to be developed and implemented. We conducted a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to quantify preferences for enhanced HIV testing features across two high-risk populations in the Kilimanjaro Region in northern Tanzania. We designed and fielded a survey with 12 choice tasks to systematically recruited fe…
The Impact of Gastrointestinal Symptoms on Patients’ Well-Being
In conclusion, a preference-based GIS is necessary to make valid information about the real burden of illness and to improve the burden of symptoms in the indication of gastrointestinal conditions. The findings of the BWS demonstrate that the common GIS is not applicable to represent the real burden of disease. The results suggest the potential modification of the established GIS by future research using a stated preference study
Public preferences for the allocation of donor organs for transplantation
Public preferences for the allocation of donor organs for transplantation
BACKGROUND: Deceased donor organs are scarce resources because of a large supply-and-demand mismatch. This scarcity leads to an ethical dilemma, forcing priority-setting of how these organs should be allocated and whom to leave behind. OBJECTIVE: To explore public preferences for the allocation of donor organs in regard to ethical aspects of distributive justice. METHODS: Focus groups were facilitated between November and December 2018 at Hannove…
Comparison of online and face-to-face valuation of the EQ-5D-5L using composite time trade-off
Compared to F2F data, TTO tasks conducted online had more inconsistencies and decreased engagement, which contributed to compromised data quality. This study illustrates the challenges of conducting online valuation studies using the TTO approach
Contract Design
The first two articles of this series on contract design have shown that complete contracts in healthcare are unrealistic. Healthcare reimbursement contracts are incomplete contracts with a high degree of uncertainty. In incomplete contracts specific contractual regulations are not made for any eventuality. For this reason it is important that the parties agree on the prevention of endogenous risks (asymmetric information after the conclusion of …
Contract Design
Information asymmetries are seen as a major obstacle to the efficient operation of integrated care programmes. Coordination and motivation problems cannot be solved at no-costs. The presented problems in the design of selective individual contracts represent a necessary but not a sufficient condition for further government intervention. A state or political failures have to be assumed continuously
A Review on Methods of Risk Adjustment and their Use in Integrated Healthcare Systems
INTRODUCTION: Effective risk adjustment is an aspect that is more and more given weight on the background of competitive health insurance systems and vital healthcare systems. The objective of this review was to obtain an overview of existing models of risk adjustment as well as on crucial weights in risk adjustment. Moreover, the predictive performance of selected methods in international healthcare systems should be analysed. THEORY AND METHODS…
How much does the communicator matter in the choice for an integrated care program
Background: Integrated Care (IC) aims to optimise the processes of healthcare delivery. Thereby the people and their needs should be in the centre of all efforts. So far the needs and preferences for integrated care programs are not well understood. What do people value on integrated care programs? What is important? Which factors do influence the decisions for or against IC? It is assumed that not only the properties of an IC program, but also t…
One size does not fit all
In order to maximize the effectiveness of "Seek, Test, and Treat" strategies for curbing the HIV epidemic, new approaches are needed to increase the uptake of HIV testing services, particularly among high-risk groups. Low HIV testing rates among such groups suggest that current testing services may not align well with the testing preferences of these populations. Female bar workers and male mountain porters have been identified as two important h…
Measuring the Triple Aim dimension “population health” in integrated care systems (ICS) using claims data – the approach of the German ICS “Gesundes Kinzigtal”
The population based integrated care system (ICS) "Gesundes Kinzigtal" in Germany has committed itself to the Triple Aim concept of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI). This means pursuing a balance of improving the health of populations, improving the individual experience of care; and reducing the per capita costs of care for populations and monitoring its progress. This study is focusing on the first dimension of the Triple Aim, ment…
HIV testing preferences in Tanzania
Testing decisions appear to be influenced by an array of often inter-linked factors across multiple domains, including quality, confidentiality, and accessibility; perceptions of these factors varied greatly across participants and across available testing options. HCT interventions that jointly target barriers spanning the three domains have the potential to increase uptake of HIV testing and deserve further exploration
Constructing Experimental Designs for Discrete-Choice Experiments
Patient preferences for integrated care networks in Germany
Background: Crucial factor of effective healthcare systems is patient-centered care. The design of healthcare delivery networks should be aligned to the needs and priorities of patients. The objective of this study was to analyze the preferences of German patients for specific characteristics of healthcare delivery
Patient-Centered Health Care Delivery Systems
The International Journal of Integrated Care (IJIC) is an online, open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes original articles in the field of integrated care on a continuous basis.IJIC has an Impact Factor of 5.120 (2020 JCR, received in June 2021)

Patient-centeredness in Integrated healthcare delivery systems - Needs, expectations and priorities for organized healthcare systems
The study provides insight into patient and experts expectations towards the organisation of integrated healthcare delivery systems. If providers and payers can take into account patient needs and expectations while implementing innovative healthcare delivery systems, greater acceptance and satisfaction will be achieved. In the best case, this will lead to better adherence resulting in better clinical outcomes
People needing overweight and obesity therapy want care co-ordination

Preferences of overweight and obese patients for weight loss programs
Patients value coordination of care and individual therapy most highly. So weight reduction therapy should enable patients to receive a structured, coordinated and interpersonal therapy that is tailored to their personal needs, behaviour and circumstances. Patients are willing to forego infrastructure quality in favour of better coordination and structure in their therapy

Patient-centered health care delivery systems
Objectives: Patient-centered care is seen as a critical factor in a high-performance healthcare system. We considered a randomized decision-situation in which the available information is given by three hypothetical health states
