  • Evidence for Middle Palaeolithic occupation and landscape change in central Armenia at the open-air site of Alapars-1

    Open Access•A Malinsky-Buller, Phil Glauberman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Here we report the findings from excavations at the open-air Middle Palaeolithic site of Alapars-1 in central Armenia. Three stratified Palaeolithic artefact assemblages were found within a 6-m-thick alluvial-aeolian sequence, located on the flanks of an obsidian-bearing lava dome. Combined sedimentological and chronological analyses reveal three phases of sedimentation and soil development. During Marine Oxygen Isotope Stages 5–3, the manner of …

Boris Gasparyan, Daniel S Adler et al.•ARTICLE•ARAMAZD Armenian Journal of Near…•2020

The area encompassing the modern Republic of Armenia lies within the Armenian highlands and is situated at the very core of a dynamic corridor between Africa and Eurasia. As such, Armenia proves critical for understanding the initial stages of human settlement and the formation of ancient civilisations in the Near East and beyond. Stone Age artefacts have been known to exist within the territory of Armenia since the end of the 19th century, and t…

  • Early Levallois technology and the Lower to Middle Paleolithic transition in the Southern Caucasus

    Open Access•D Adler, D S Adler et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2014

An early assemblage of obsidian artifacts Levallois technology is the name for the stone knapping technique used to create tools thousands of years ago. The technique appeared in the archeological record across Eurasia 200 to 300 thousand years ago (ka) and appeared earlier in Africa. Adler et al. challenge the hypothesis that the technique's appearance in Eurasia was the result of the expansion of hominins from Africa. Levallois obsidian artifac…

Middle Palaeolithic blade industries have been known for many years from the southern part of the Great Caucasus. Recently published technological studies demonstrate strong affinities between the laminar assemblages from Djruchula Cave (Republic of Georgia) and those from several Near Eastern Early Middle Paleolithic sites. A series of new thermoluminescence dates from Djruchula Cave indicate at least two distinct human occupation phases (betwee…

Over the past several decades a variety of models have been proposed to explain perceived behavioral and cognitive differences between Neanderthals and modern humans. A key element in many of these models and one often used as a proxy for behavioral modernity is the frequency and nature of hunting among Palaeolithic populations. Here new archaeological data from Ortvale Klde, a late Middleearly Upper Palaeolithic rockshelter in the Georgian Repub…
