The authors address questions in current business and policy literature regarding the structural linkages evolving in the globalization process. Using the standard cross-cultural sample, I show that the presence of agriculture in precapitalist societies is only weakly related to the richness of the environment and climate, but is more highly related to the population density. A new statistical technique permits detection of the influence of certain types of diffusion on the results of a cross-cultural analysis.
