A Longitudinal Ecologic Analysis of Neighborhood-Level Social Inequalities in Health in Texas
Most health studies use cross-sectional data to examine neighborhood context because of the difficulty of collecting and analyzing longitudinal data; this prevents an examination of historical trends that may influence health outcomes. Using the Neighborhood Change Database, we categorized longitudinal (1990-2010) poverty and White concentration trajectories (long-term low, long-term moderate, long-term high, increasing, or decreasing) for Texas …

The Cognitive Health Risk of Social Isolation Mediated by Dietary Risks
Our findings suggest that the negative impact of social isolation on cognitive health is through its role in dietary habits and practice. Findings helped our understanding of how social isolation yields cognitive health risks and called attention to dietary risks in cognitive health promotion efforts. Targeted approaches should be taken for older immigrants who are socially isolated

Neighborhood Diversity Is Good for Your Health
Racial concentration of neighborhoods is often associated with the risk of preterm birth (PTB) for women. This study examined differences between racially diverse and racially concentrated neighborhoods when examining preterm birth. Individual-level data were obtained from Texas natality files for 2009-2011, and neighborhood-level (i.e., census tract) data were obtained from the decennial census in 2010 and the American Community Survey 2005-2009…
Adolescents with substance use referred to child protective services
Adolescent substance use has been linked to several negative outcomes, which can be exacerbated by exposure to adversity such as child maltreatment. However, few studies have examined the intersection of adolescent substance use and child protective service (CPS) involvement. This study examined the relationship between substance use treatment and entries into foster care among adolescents referred to CPS for maltreatment. Data for this study cam…

County-Level Economic Changes and Drug Mortality in the United States
We aimed at examining whether county-level economic changes were associated with changes in county-level drug mortality rates since the Great Recession and whether the association is equally distributed across major sociodemographic subgroups. Trends of Substance Use among Individuals with Cardiovascular Disease in the United States, 2015–2019
Despite the adverse effects of substance use on health among individuals with preexisting cardiovascular disease (CVD), little is known about trends and correlates for substance use among individuals with CVD. Using nationally representative data from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 7339), we conducted survey-adjusted logistic…

Housing Instability and Depression among US Mothers Following a Nonmarital Birth
Mothers who had a nonmarital birth experience multiple risk factors for depression, including housing instability. The Role of the Neighborhood Social Environment in Physical Activity among Hispanic Children
Little is known about how the neighborhood social environment (e.g., safety, crime, traffic) impacts child physical activity. We examine the mechanism by which the neighborhood social environment is associated with child physical activity, moderated by individual-level cultural factors (e.g., language at home, immigrant generation) and mediated by neighborhood physical activity-related social norms (e.g., seeing walkers in the neighborhood). Data…
