Akademisk kvalitet, vad är det
What is academic quality? On the decline of academic autonomyIn light of the transformations that universities currently undergo, with Bologna as a keyword, the following questions are put: What ideals lie behind the assessment of academic “excellence” and “quality”? What agents have the ability to define what is good science and education today? These questions are approached through Pierre Bourdieus concept of field.Looking at the development t…
View of Life and Health
The quest for causes behind health and sickness proposes deeper causes like per- sonality and general view of life. Two such concepts have been shown to associate with health indicators in a systematic way, sense of coherence and view of life. Sense of coherence (SOC) is defined as the sum of three factors, comprehensibility, manage- ability, and meaningfulness. View of life (VOL) consists of three components, general theories of man and the worl…
Does organization matter? A multilevel analysis of the demand-control model applied to human services
The demand-control model (DC model) in occupational epidemiology suggests that health, an individual attribute, is partly determined by work organization, via the interplay of demand and control, job strain. The objective of this study was empirical assessment of the model's tenet of an organizational determination of individual health. An emerging analytic method, multi-level modelling, permits such an assessment. The study encompasses two large…
Psychosocial work environment in human service organizations
This paper concerns two models that were introduced in two different research domains during the 1970's. The first model regards human service organizations (HSO) as a specific type of organization. The second model, the demand-control model (DC model), concerns the joint effects of job demands and job control on worker health. In the HSO model, there are analyses of the content of jobs, considering the specific characteristics of HSOs, but littl…
Locality Research and Comparative Analysis
A method is described to trace 'locality', or spatial variations in policy, through comparative analysis. It is argued that the problem of structure versus agency can never be solved once and for all by philosophical arguments, but always has to be rephrased into empirically manageable terms. This is possible through use of the 'most similar' approach of comparative analysis. When external structural determinants of policy are kept under control,…
