  • Inequities in food access during the Covid-19 pandemic: A multilevel, mixed methods pilot study

Open Access•Megha R Aepala, Alice Guan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

Individuals who were food insecure reported a constellation of needs beyond food, including needs related to safety and greater social equity. Our data model illustrates the potential for rapid assessment of community residents' experiences to provide enhanced understanding of community-level needs and effective support in the face of changing circumstances

Open Access•Jamie Chang, Philip Boo Riley et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2022

Abatements, or “sweeps,” are key instruments used by local governments to address increasing numbers of homeless encampments, but they are controversial, underdocumented, and understudied. To examine how social policies, such as abatements, impact the health of people who are unhoused, we interviewed unhoused people on their recent experiences with local abatement practices. Between 2018 and 2020, we used community-based participatory research ap…

    Open Access•Catherine Doren, Katherine Y Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2019•Citada por: 7•Referências: 45

Integrating ideas about intersectionality with life course theories, we explore how trajectories of gender earnings inequality vary across race and education. Past research suggests that gender earnings gaps by race and education are narrower for more disadvantaged groups, yet it remains unknown whether these key differences amplify, decline, or remain constant over the life course. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, …

  • Stability and Change in Health Behavior Profiles of U.S. Adults

    Open Access•Sarah Burgard, Sarah A Burgard et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2018•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

  • Differential reporting of discriminatory experiences in Brazil and the United States

Open Access•Sarah Burgard, Débora Castiglione et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2017•Citada por: 10•Referências: 27

There has been little cross-national comparison of perceived discrimination, and few studies have considered how intersectional identities shape perception of discriminatory treatment in different societies. Using data from the ELSA-Brasil, a study of Brazilian civil servants, and the Americans' Changing Lives Study, a nationally-representative sample of U.S. adults, we compare reports of lifetime discrimination among race-by-gender groups in eac…

    Open Access•Sarah Burgard, Sarah A Burgard et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2013•Citada por: 27•Referências: 108

In this review, we touch on a broad array of ways that work is linked to health and health disparities for individuals and societies. First focusing on the health of individuals, we discuss the health differences between those who do and do not work for pay, and review key positive and negative exposures that can generate health disparities among the employed. These include both psychosocial factors like the benefits of a high-status job or the b…
