  • Spatial analysis of air pollutant exposure and its association with metabolic diseases using machine learning

Open Access•Jun Liu, Jingjing Liu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The ASEMD pipeline successfully integrates ML models, epidemiological methods, and spatial analysis techniques, providing a robust framework for understanding the complex interactions between APs and MDs. We also identified specific APs, including P M 10 , C O , and S O 2 , as being strongly linked to higher rates of diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension in central and northern cities. Future region-specific public health strategies or interve…

    Open Access•Yao Lu, Xiaoguang Li•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2025•Referências: 99

Despite tremendous advancements women have made in higher education, gender inequality has persisted in the labor market, even among college graduates. The present study seeks to understand such paradoxical trends by investigating an underexplored source of gender inequality among highly-educated workers-how educational credentials translate into labor market positions. We operationalize this translational process as education-occupation mismatch…

  • The sources of ethnic earnings disparities

    Xiaoguang Li, Xiaoxian Guo•ARTICLE•New Community•2025•Referências: 31

This article examines the earnings disparities between ethnic minorities and Han Chinese, with a particular focus on the role of social capital and the moderating effects of geographic concentration in different employment sectors. Using the China Survey of Social Change in 2010, we find that social capital, minority concentration, and the employment sector account for 15%, 7%, and 59%, respectively, of the ethnic earning gap. Notably, we find th…

  • Underemployed and Penalized

    Open Access•Yao Lu, Xiaoguang Li et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 48

How does education-occupation mismatch shape racial/ethnic labor market inequality among highly educated workers? Bridging the literatures on racial/ethnic discrimination and labor market signaling, we propose a new concept, "racialized signaling," to explain inequality in the college-to-work transition, operationalized through education-occupation mismatch. We then use longitudinal data to examine the labor market consequences of racialized sign…

  • The bidirectional relationship between activities of daily living and frailty during short-and long-term follow-up period among the middle-aged and older population

Open Access•Xiaoping Li, Xiaoguang Li et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Objective: Frailty and activities of daily living (ADL) disability are common conditions among older population. Studies on the bidirectional relationship between frailty and ADL are limited. The current study examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between frailty and ADL in middle-aged and older Chinese individuals. Methods: The data was collected through the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), conducted …

  • Social networks in China

Open Access•Xiaoguang Li, Yanjie Bian et al.•ARTICLE•Chinese Journal of Sociology•2024

This paper is a thematic review of the theoretical analysis and empirical research carried out by sociologists about guanxi networks in the past decade. Among other topics of sociological interest, the authors have chosen to focus on five aspects of guanxi networks in China: diverse theoretical approaches, changing trends, causal inference, positive and negative effects, and relationally altered social stratification. In each of these aspects, th…

  • Education-Occupation Linkage in the Highly-Educated Workforce

Open Access•Yao Lu, Xiaoguang Li et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2024•Citada por: 3•Referências: 40

The present study investigates education-to-occupation linkage by race/ethnicity in the increasingly diverse educated workforce of the United States. We use a recently introduced linkage approach and identify two dimensions of linkage between educational credentials and occupation (vertical and horizontal linkage). Using data from the 2014 -2018 American Community Survey, we find notable differences in the total strength of education-occupation l…

  • Understanding responses to managerialism

Yixuan Wang, Xiaoguang Li et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2023•Citada por: 6•Referências: 26

The adoption of a corporate style of university management in China has resulted in a context in which performance indicators are the primary means of assessing university faculty members. Most faculty members work under the 'shadow' of managerial control. Drawing on the face culture, this article delineates various complex tactics employed by Chinese university faculty and, more importantly, explores what underpins their behavioral responses. Ba…

  • Education–Occupation Mismatch and Nativity Inequality Among Highly Educated U.S. Workers

    Open Access•Xiaoguang Li, Yao Lu•ARTICLE•Demography•2023•Citada por: 8•Referências: 72

Extensive research has documented persistent nativity inequality in the U.S. labor market, even among high-skilled immigrants. Yet, this phenomenon has not been sufficiently explained. This study investigates whether different types of education–occupation mismatch are a source of this inequality. Using longitudinal data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation, we examine nativity differences in the incidence and wage penalty of educa…

    Open Access•Yao Lu, Xiaoguang Li•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2021

Despite remarkable educational gains of minorities, ethnoracial wage inequality persists and has even expanded among highly educated workers. Conventional explanations for this inequality are primarily derived from comparing workers across different educational levels and are less salient for understanding inequalities within the highly educated workforce. This study examines a previously overlooked source of ethnoracial inequality among highly e…

    Open Access•Yao Lu, Xiaoguang Li•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2020•Citada por: 7•Referências: 10

Recent research has revealed an epidemiologic paradox within immigrants: undocumented immigrants often exhibit similar or even better health outcomes than documented immigrants despite their socio‐economic disadvantages. The present study examines whether this paradox partly reflects heterogeneity in immigrant health selection by documentation status and gender. We examine the case of Mexico–US immigration using data from the Mexican Migration Pr…
