A Phenomenological Analysis of ‘Thinking a Lot’ Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Vietnam
This qualitative study explored Thinking a Lot (TAL), a culturally patterned idiom of distress through which individuals describe and make sense of psychological and somatic suffering, among Vietnamese men who have sex with men (MSM). Between June and October 2018, 197 participants completed a verbally administered standardized questionnaire containing quantitative and qualitative questions about TAL. Qualitative responses were analyzed thematica…
Outdoor air pollution and psychiatric symptoms in adolescents
These findings suggest that PM 2.5 exposure is associated with inflammation and anxiety symptoms in adolescence, with notable sex differences. As a modifiable risk factor, reducing outdoor air pollution exposure may help mitigate psychiatric symptoms in youth
Racial Discrimination and Fear‐Based Symptoms
Racial discrimination (RD) increases the risk of fear‐based disorders, such as anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and alters activity in brain regions important for fear extinction in adults. However, little is known about these associations in adolescence—a key period for the emergence of these disorders—especially among Black youth, who frequently experience RD. This study examined RD's links to anxiety, PTSD symptoms, fear extin…
Applying the Research Domain Criteria to Social Determinants of Community Mental Health in Low-Resource Settings
There is increasing recognition of the importance of integrating social determinants of mental health (SDoMH) into research frameworks to better understand how socioeconomic and environmental stressors shape mental health outcomes, particularly in low-resource settings. This paper presents an innovative conceptual approach that combines the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) with a social determinants lens to explore the pathways linking social adve…
A network analysis of 'thinking a lot
Post-traumatic stress and future substance use outcomes
PTSD symptoms were highly associated with tobacco and alcohol use, while the association with prospective cannabis use is not clear. Findings suggest that understanding the different risk stratification that occurs can aid in tailoring interventions to populations at greatest risk to best mitigate the comorbidity between PTSD symptoms and future substance use outcomes. We demonstrate that this is particularly salient for tobacco use and, to some …
Genetic risk for hospitalization of African American patients with severe mental illness reveals HLA loci
We observed a strong association between H-SMI and a locus that has been consistently and strongly associated with SCZ in multiple studies (6p21.32-p22.1), possibly indicating an involvement of the immune system and the immune response in the development of severe transdiagnostic SMI
Developing Covid-19 vaccine recommendations during the pandemic
A National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) is a multi-disciplinary body of national experts that provide evidence-based recommendations to policy-makers to assist them in making informed immunization policy and programme decisions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, NITAGs faced many challenges in making evidence-based recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines due to the rapidly evolving situation with new vaccine products available in a sho…
The role of specific emotion dysregulation facets in the association between child violence exposure and psychopathology
These findings suggest that certain components of emotion dysregulation serve as an indirect pathway of influence for community violence exposure on child behavior, and the pathways differ between externalizing and internalizing behavior outcomes. Emotion dysregulation may serve as an important potential treatment target in reducing long-term risks associated with violence exposure in urban communities of color. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024…
Blood-derived deoxyribonucleic acid methylation clusters associate with adverse social exposures and endophenotypes of stress-related psychiatric illness in a trauma-exposed cohort of women
Adverse social exposures (ASEs) such as low income, low educational attainment, and childhood/adult trauma exposure are associated with variability in brain region measurements of gray matter volume (GMV), surface area (SA), and cortical thickness (CT). These CNS morphometries are associated with stress-related psychiatric illnesses and represent endophenotypes of stress-related psychiatric illness development. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as 5-me…
Elevated trauma exposure and mental health burden among men who have sex with men in Vietnam
The purpose of this study was to characterize trauma exposure and mental health burden among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Participants comprise 100 HIV-positive and 98 high-risk, HIV-negative MSM, ranging from 18 to 29 years of age. Data were collected using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Traumatic Events Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and PTSD Symptom Scale. A subset of parti…
Psychometric Properties of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 -Brief Form in a Community Sample with High Rates of Trauma Exposure
In the current study, we used a sample of predominantly African-American women with high rates of trauma exposure (N = 434) to examine psychometric properties of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form (PID-5-BF). We compared model fit between a model with five correlated latent factors and a higher-order model in which the five latent factors were used to estimate a single “general pathology” factor. Additionally, we computed estimates of…
Association between Hippocampal Volume and Working Memory in 10,000+ 9–10-Year-Old Children
While right and left hippocampal volumes are determinants of children's list sorting working memory, these effects seem to be more salient for female than male children. Research is needed on the role of socialization, sex hormones, and brain functional connectivity as potential mechanisms that may explain the observed sex differences in the role of hippocampal volume as a correlate of working memory
Mental health in HIV prevention and care
Intergenerational effects of maternal PTSD
Maternal PTSD may be associated with negative child behavior outcomes, and this relation appears to be mediated by increased parenting stress. Stress-reducing interventions for parents with PTSD could improve child outcomes, especially for girls. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
Intergenerational transmission of risk for PTSD symptoms in African American children
These results suggest that maternal emotion dysregulation may be an important factor in influencing their child's PTSD symptoms above and beyond child-specific variables. Both maternal and child emotion dysregulation could be valuable treatment targets for improving maternal mental health and parenting behaviors and bolstering child health outcomes, thus reducing intergenerational transmission of risk associated with trauma. (PsycInfo Database Re…
Cognitive and neural facets of dissociation in a traumatized population
Dissociative phenomena are frequently experienced by psychologically traumatized people. However, little is known about the cognitive profiles of highly dissociative traumatized individuals, and corresponding patterns of neural connectivity when attentional networks are engaged in the context of emotion. One hundred seventeen traumatized women completed the multiscale dissociation inventory (MDI) and neuropsychological testing; MDI scores were us…
Food addiction and substance addiction in women
Trauma exposure, PTSD, and parenting in a community sample of low-income, predominantly African American mothers and children
Trauma and PTSD in parents may impact parental distress and child abuse potential, potentially increasing children's risk for not only the experience of child abuse, but also PTSD. Child and family interventions should consider child and parental trauma and PTSD as important factors to address. (PsycINFO Database Record
A Gene-Based Analysis of Acoustic Startle Latency
Latency of the acoustic startle response is the time required from the presentation of startling auditory stimulus until the startle response is elicited and provides an index of neural processing speed. Latency is prolonged in subjects with schizophrenia compared to controls in some but not all studies and is 68-90% heritable in baseline startle trials. In order to determine the genetic association with latency as a potential inroad into genetic…
Roma women’s higher education participation
There are striking gaps between Roma and non-Roma higher education (HE) participation rates, with less than 1% of Roma possessing a tertiary-level qualification [United Nations Development Programme, World Bank and European Commission. 2011a. “The Situation of Roma in 11 EU Member States.” Accessed 3 April 2015. http://issuu.com/undp_in_europe_cis/docs/_roma_at_a_glance_web/1#download]. The resilience framework as a strategy to combat stress-related disorders
Childhood Trauma and Comt Genotype Interact to Increase Hippocampal Activation in Resilient Individuals
Both childhood trauma and a functional catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) genetic polymorphism have been associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression; however, it is still unclear whether the two interact and how this interaction relates to long-term risk or resilience. Imaging and genotype data were collected on 73 highly traumatized women. DNA extracted from saliva was used to determine COMT genotype (Val/Val, n = 38, Me…
Circulating Levels of Hormones, Lipids, and Immune Mediators in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – A 3-Month Follow-Up Study
A number of peripheral blood analytes have been proposed as potential biomarkers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Few studies have investigated whether observed changes in biomarkers persist over time. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of combat-related chronic PTSD with a wide array of putative PTSD biomarkers and to determine reliability of the measurements, i.e., correlations over time. Croatian combat veterans …
Psychophysiological Response to Virtual Reality and Subthreshold Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Recently Deployed Military
OBJECTIVE: Subthreshold posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has garnered recent attention because of the significant distress and functional impairment associated with the symptoms as well as the increased risk of progression to full PTSD. However, the clinical presentation of subthreshold PTSD can vary widely and therefore is not clearly defined, nor is there an evidence-based treatment approach. Thus, we aim to further the understanding of sub…

Early maternal recognition of offspring vocalizations in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)
Effects of nonmaternal restraint on the vocalizations of infant rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)
This study explored the effects of restraint by females other than the mother on the vocalizations of infant rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in a captive social setting. In this species, females are very attracted to young infants and will frequently approach, groom, and hold the infant. Incompetent handling, abusive behavior, or extended periods away from the mother that prevent the infants from nursing represent potentially significant risks f…

Dark-Enhanced Startle Responses and Heart Rate Variability in a Traumatized Civilian Sample
OBJECTIVE: Trauma is associated with increased risk for anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To further understand biologic mechanisms of PTSD, we examined the dark-enhanced startle response, a psychophysiological correlate of anxiety, and heart rate variability (HRV) in traumatized individuals with and without PTSD. The associations of these measures with PTSD may be sex-specific because of their associations with the …

Conditioned Fear Associated Phenotypes as Robust, Translational Indices of Trauma-, Stressor-, and Anxiety-Related Behaviors
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a heterogeneous disorder that affects individuals exposed to trauma (e.g., combat, interpersonal violence, and natural disasters). It is characterized by hyperarousal, intrusive reminders of the trauma, avoidance of trauma-related cues, and negative cognition and mood. This heterogeneity indicates the presence of multiple neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development and maintenance of PTSD. Fear c…
