What training do workplace mentors receive to support degree apprentices? An activity theory analysis, focusing on inclusion
Workplace mentors play a crucial role in supporting degree apprentices, as guides and advocates in the workplace and partners in the tripartite meetings with the university. The mentor can help to facilitate relevant work-based opportunities and identify appropriate credit-bearing workplace projects. So, it is in the interest of the university to provide the mentor with appropriate information and training. This study aimed to establish the curre…
The framed and contested meanings of sport mega-event 'legacies
This article examines the ways in which envisioned sport mega-event legacies are publicly framed, communicated and contested. By employing Bourdieusian field theory, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) as a case, and drawing upon documentary and media analysis, this article questions how CWG 2022 legacies were framed in a pre-event context. The article makes two key arguments. First, dominant actors within the mega-event field framed a c…
Eye movement desensitization reprocessing as a treatment for PTSD in conflict-affected areas
This research supports the use of EMDR for the treatment of PTS, depression, and anxiety symptoms in individuals with low socioeconomic status and refugees, thus contributing to the research base for populations that are under-researched. Mental health services, especially in conflict-affected settings, would benefit from using EMDR therapy to target these pathologies in these populations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserv…
Exploring how a disability sport charity utilises exchange relationships with external organisations to sustain operations in times of lockdown
National lockdowns exacerbated the inequalities that many disabled people faced in accessing and engaging in sport and physical activity. Like many organizations, disability sport and physical recreation-focused charities were constrained in their ability to deliver and sustain their services during such periods. This study explored the exchange relationships between a disability sport charity and its existing and prospective business clients as …
Concussion Reporting and Safeguarding Policy Development in British American Football
The objective of this study was to examine concussion reporting and safeguarding policy in British American Football (BAF). Data were collected via an online survey tool. The data presented are part of a broader study that examined injury profiles, concussion reporting behaviors, and medical provision in BAF. Concussion-like symptoms were found in over half (58.8%) of the participants. Of those, 36.4% reported they had previously been formally di…
The social management of medical ethics in sport
This paper examines one of the major ethical challenges in the practice of sports medicine, confidentiality. Drawing on interview and questionnaire data with doctors and physiotherapists working in English professional football clubs, it explores the degree to which ethical compliance has improved since the publication of, and publicity surrounding, an earlier study of medical practice in professional football conducted by Waddington and Roderick…
On being 'head strong
In recent years there has been growing concern about concussion in sport in general and rugby union in particular. The qualitative study reported here draws on interviews ( n=20) with adult players in non-elite club rugby union in Ireland in order to explore the frames of reference within which they perceive, give meaning to and manage concussion. Within a sporting subculture which emphasizes lay sporting values - particularly the value of 'playi…

‘Involved in every step’
This paper examines how the medical and non-medical skills of physiotherapists enable members of the profession to become central agents in the multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) which dominate sports health care. Drawing on empirical data derived from interviews with sports physiotherapists and doctors working in UK Olympic sport MDTs, this article argues that the role and influence of physiotherapy in elite sports health care can be explained in re…
Sport and exercise medicine's professional project
This article documents the intended and unintended outcomes of recent organizational change in UK elite sport. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 14 doctors and 14 physiotherapists who are current members of the British Olympic Association medical and physiotherapy committees, it argues that attempts by managers in sports medicine to create a highly specialized area of practice have created more immediate tensions within and between both …
Carry mi ackee go a Jamaican market
Jamaica’s national fruit, the ackee, in its various stages of development and use, serves as the metaphor to reveal key elements of this island nation’s national culture and, by extension, its business and organizational environment. Four stages of the ackee are employed: (1) the TREE, which, in its seeding and growth, exhibits an intrinsic resilience reflected in the country’s ability to overcome adverse environmental conditions; (2) the CLOSED …
