They Not Like Us
There is a broader tendency to understand research on minority mental health using a “they” versus “us” historical backdrop. Across time, the “minority paradox” emerged as a contemporary example of the way othering has positioned research to better understand why minorities have the same or better mental health rather than why non-Latino whites have poor mental health. I examined the association between racioethnicity and the lifetime prevalence …
Epigenetic age acceleration mediates the relationship between neighborhood deprivation and pain severity in adults with or at risk for knee osteoarthritis pain
Race-Ethnicity, Social Roles, and Mental Health
Social role involvement engenders sense of purpose and meaning to life, which sustains positive mental health. Racism within American society, however, results in experiences that disadvantage ethnoracial minorities, thus making it likely that social roles do not have universal remunerations. Using the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (N = 12,526), this study explores the association between role participation and psychological dist…
Conventions of Courtship
Dating rituals include dating-courtship methods that are regularly enacted. This study explores gender and race differences in the relative importance placed on certain symbolic activities previously identified by the dating literature as constituting such rituals. Using information collected from a racially diverse sample of college students ( N = 680), it is found that some traditional gender differences persist, but that these are also cross-c…
More than Tuskegee
This paper describes results of a qualitative study that explored barriers to research participation among African American adults. A purposive sampling strategy was used to identify African American adults with and without previous research experience. A total of 11 focus groups were conducted. Groups ranged in size from 4-10 participants (N=70). Mistrust of the health care system emerged as a primary barrier to participation in medical research…
Race and Psychological Distress
We analyze data from the South African Stress and Health Study, a nationally representative in-person psychiatric epidemiologic survey of 4,351 adults conducted as part of the World Mental Health Survey Initiative between January 2002 and June 2004. All blacks (Africans, Coloreds, and Indians) initially report higher levels of non-specific distress and anger/hostility than whites. Access to socioeconomic resources helps explain differences in non…
Twelve-month mental disorders in South Africa
Background South Africa's history and current social conditions suggest that mental disorders are likely to be a major contributor to disease burden, but there has been no national study using standardized assessment tools. Method The South African Stress and Health Study was a nationally representative in-person psychiatric epidemiological survey of 4351 adults (aged ⩾18 years) that was conducted as part of the WHO World Mental Health (WMH) Surv…
Race, Gender, and SES Disparities in Self-Assessed Health, 1974-2004
Despite improvements in the status of Blacks and women over the past 30 years, racial and gender disparities in mortality and morbidity persist. Using General Social Survey (GSS) data from 1974 to 2004, the authors explore the extent to which race, gender, and socioeconomic status converge to produce differences in self-assessed health. The intersectionality paradigm is used to guide this work on health disparities. The authors find that the gend…
Social Sources Of Racial Disparities In Health
Racial disparities in mortality over time reflect divergent pathways to the current large racial disparities in health. The residential concentration of African Americans is high and distinctive, and the related inequities in neighborhood environments, socioeconomic circumstances, and medical care are important factors in initiating and maintaining racial disparities in health. Efforts are needed to identify and maximize health-enhancing resource…
Health Inequalities Among Minority Populations
There are several challenges facing scholars studying health inequalities among minority populations. Primary among these challenges are developing adequate measures of social inequality and introducing appropriate strategies for eliminating health disparities. More research is sorely needed on both of these fronts as evidenced by the health paradox facing black, middle class men and women. This effort, however, can best move the study of health …
Role Sequencing
Role sequencing refers to the ordering of social roles. According to the normative order hypothesis, adults who follow a certain sequencing of their social roles will be better adjusted than their peers who follow other life course patterns. The normative order is defined as first entering the paid labor force, getting married, and later having children. This study tests this hypothesis by analyzing retrospective life history data from three subs…
A Research Agenda for the Black Middle Class
In this article we discuss the social position of the black middle class and two forms of work stress that appear unique to this group: token stress and social rejection. We outline a research agenda for studying: (1) the relationship between these stressors and mental health in the context of the work environment, and (2) the type of strategies that appear especially efficacious (or problematic) with regard to these problems. We begin the paper …
Negative Life Events and Psychological Distress among Young Adults
This study examines the relationship between college career stage, negative life events, and psychological distress. Young adults enrolled in three universities completed a survey, which included a life events inventory and several psychological distress scales (depression, anxiety, anger/hostility). As expected, negative experiences in affiliative opportunities (peer relationships) were most predictive of distress; younger students were vulnerab…
I Am Woman
We examine the psychological impact of a range of social identities among a sample of African American women. Using data from the National Survey of Black Americans (NSBA), we find that measures of body image, role performance, discrimination, and social class position are related to mental health status. Women of lower social class standing are especially at risk for poor mental health outcomes. Having low educational attainment, low personal in…

Role Occupancy and Minority Mental Health
Most studies of the mental health consequences of role occupancy do not consider racial/ethnic variation. Using a national sample of adults (N = 13,017), this paper examines the relationship between three role characteristics (role accumulation, role status, and role combinations) and mental health for Blacks, Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans and explores the extent to which these patterns differ from those for non-Hispanic Whites. Blacks and Puerto R…

Sons Versus Daughters
This study argues for the incorporation of sex composition of offspring in the study of parental values and attitudes. Using a sample of mothers of pre-school aged children residing in two cities in Indiana, we examine the consequences of sex composition on two important parental views on socialization. We find that as the relative number of sons versus daughters increases, mothers believe “children always suffer when both parents work outside of…
Specifying the Buffering Hypothesis
The concept of «matching» is central to theories of social support, as researchers attempt to specify the links between the type of support, the source of support, and the type of stressor, and to identify their function in the support process. This study examines these links more closely by differentiating between spouse and friend support, and by considering different types of life problems (e.g., role and ambient strains). I hypothesized a con…
