  • Shaping Youth Tobacco Use

    Open Access•Tong Lin, Brittney Keller‐Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

Objectives: Research has established that increasing policy support among adults can encourage behavior change; however, policy support, particularly regarding Tobacco 21 (T21), remains understudied among youth. This study examines whether exposure to T21 policy messages can increase support for the policy and reduce intentions to use tobacco among youth. Methods: We recruited an online convenience sample of U.S. youth aged 18–20 (final analytic N…

  • Adult tobacco product use patterns across the urban–rural continuum

Open Access•Jing Zhang, Shyanika W Rose et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2026

PURPOSE: To determine the association between adult tobacco/nicotine product use over time and residence location (urban, suburban, town, rural), controlling for demographics. METHODS: Data from Waves 4-7 (2016-2023) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study (N = 18,590 adults) were analyzed using survey-weighted logistic regression to evaluate location and time differences in likelihoods of current, daily, and established u…

  • Adolescents’ and Young Adults’ use of “Boost” mode in their E-cigarettes

Megan E Roberts, Smita Parajuli et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2026

If, as brands claim, boost modes alter e-cigarette aerosol production, they likely have implications for AYA nicotine addiction and health effects. Longitudinal and laboratory investigations on boost modes are urgently needed

  • Modelling how age-restricted location policies would impact tobacco retailer density in four US states

Peter F Craigmile, Emerson Webb et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2026

The degree of TRD reduction estimated by these simulation models for an ARL policy is more powerful than what has been found for other retailer-focused strategies (eg, prohibiting tobacco retailers close to schools). ARL policies could be a promising and potentially powerful strategy for reducing TRD in the USA

  • Urban–rural disparities in oral nicotine pouch sales and flavors in the United States

Open Access•Lei Xu, Saber Feizy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

ONP sales exhibit significant urban-rural disparities, with rural areas showing higher per capita sales overall, but urban areas showing stronger preferences for flavored products and greater price responsiveness. As a result, regulatory measures targeting flavors or pricing may have a greater impact in urban areas compared to rural ones

  • Real-Time Evaluation of Craving, Withdrawal, and Respiratory Symptoms Among Adolescents and Young Adults Who Use e-Cigarettes

    Open Access•Megan E Roberts, Bo Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: A growing body of work has identified short-term harms of e-cigarette use that may be indicative of long-term harm. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a methodology that can contribute to these efforts, as it lends itself to capturing moment-to-moment changes in symptoms as people go about their natural environments. This study leveraged EMA to assess the correspondence between instances of e-cigarette use and changes in self-re…

  • Community Awareness-Raising to Support Tobacco Policy

Open Access•Megan E Roberts, Brittany Alexander et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2025

BACKGROUND: The tobacco retailer environment (TRE) harms communities, but the implementation of policies to address it have been slow and uneven and receive tepid public support. OBJECTIVE: To test whether a smartphone app's photo-mapping activity could raise community awareness of the TRE. METHODS: This was a non-randomized study with a pre-post design. For three weeks, 75 university students engaged with the app, which incentivized participants…

Open Access•Jenny E Ozga, Andrea Milstred et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2025

PURPOSE: This study compared two classifications of rurality and their associations with cigarette, e-cigarette, and smokeless tobacco (SLT) use among a nationally representative sample of 31,196 US adults. METHODS: Data from Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study. Weighted descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regressions assessed whether two classifications of rurality were differentially associated with pas…

  • Tobacco retailer density and rurality across four US states

Open Access•Emerson Webb, Peter F Craigmile et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2025

PURPOSE: Research has demonstrated many types of disparities in tobacco retailer density (TRD), but these analyses often fail to explore rural disparities. Given the substantial burden of rural tobacco use in the USA, this is a critical gap. The purpose of the present study was to estimate rural disparities in TRD across four US states. METHODS: For the states of California, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Ohio, we used spatial statistical metho…

  • Prospective associations between nicotine type and the continuation of youth e-cigarette use

Open Access•Taylor Harrington, Amy K Ferketich et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our findings suggest that, when it comes to predicting the continuation of vaping among youth who have already initiated, nicotine type (i.e., the ratio of R- and S-isomers) may play a critical role. It is encouraging that R/S nicotine may have lower addictive potential; however, tobacco control should be vigilant for marketing strategies attempting to establish R/S nicotine e-cigarettes as "starter" products for youth

  • I'm sure within 5 minutes I can find someone that will be selling it’

    Jill M Singer, Elizabeth G Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

Despite Massachusetts implementing a comprehensive flavoured tobacco restriction (FTR), young adults report being able to access flavoured tobacco products with ease. Snapchat was the social media platform that participants brought up frequently to find people selling flavoured tobacco products. Preventing the sale of flavoured tobacco products through Snapchat and other social sources will be critical for Massachusetts' FTR to have its intended …

  • Colour attributes in packaging of oral nicotine pouches

Mahmood A Alalwan, Lauren Long et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

Our results suggest the colour scheme of some ONP packaging was designed to indicate the flavour and nicotine concentration. These characteristics may influence consumers' beliefs about ONPs, and appeal to different populations. AI tools can be valuable in the surveillance of those ONP packaging features

  • Impact of the California state flavoured tobacco sales restriction on e-cigarette use behaviours among youth

    Jessica L Barrington-Trimis, Louisiana M Sanchez et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

We observed limited change in the use of flavoured e-cigarettes after a state-wide law restricting flavoured tobacco sales was enacted. Findings may reflect inadequate implementation (eg, insufficient enforcement efforts), which warrants further study to reduce youth access to flavoured tobacco products

  • Prospective association of tobacco retailer density and neighbourhood walkability with youth vaping initiation in California, USA

    Alyssa F Harlow, Laura K Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

Findings highlight the potential role of restricting retailer density in preventing youth vaping, particularly in areas characterised by both greater walkability and tobacco retailer density

  • The Effects of Oral Nicotine Pouch Packaging Features on Adult Tobacco Users’ and Non-Users’ Product Perceptions

Open Access•Darren Mays, Lauren Long et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The study findings demonstrate that the nicotine concentration displayed on ONP packaging can affect adults' perceptions of ONPs. Further research on the effects of ONP packaging features emphasizing nicotine (e.g., "tobacco free" nicotine claims) on tobacco users and non-users is needed to assess their potential public health impact

  • Juul and its ‘Action Network’ attempt to prevent a local flavour ban

    Megan E Roberts, Joanne G Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

  • What do young people know about the nicotine in their e-cigarettes

Grace Balzer, Anthony Landrus et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

These findings indicate the generally limited awareness about nicotine among youth who used e-cigarettes. Improvements in health communications and requirements for e-cigarette industry disclosures are necessary to ensure that consumers are better informed about the dimensions-and the risks-of the nicotine they are consuming

  • Switching stories

    Joanne G Patterson, Devin T LaPolt et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

This study presents a foundation for understanding how adult users describe JUUL, including their experiences using JUUL to 'switch' or stop smoking. Currently, the effectiveness of ENDS for smoking cessation is not supported by substantial evidence; however, if cessation is defined as 'quitting combustible tobacco products', then regulators should be aware that switch and cessation messages may not be distinct

  • Adolescent males’ responses to blu’s fake warnings

    Brittney Keller‐Hamilton, Megan E Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2019

Adolescents viewing an advertisement with a fake warning were less likely to recall the advertisement's actual warning or health risks. Although e-cigarette advertisements now carry large FDA-mandated warnings, this tactic could be used for cigarette advertisements that continue to carry small warnings in the USA. Findings underscore the necessity of tobacco advertisement surveillance and study of advertisements' effects on adolescents

Peter F Craigmile, Nathaniel Onnen et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

Licensing-law strategies could be a central tobacco control effort that benefits both the overall population and vulnerable communities. Policymakers will need to consider their community's characteristics when selecting licensing-law strategies to correct (rather than inadvertently widen) density disparities. But when matched with the appropriate strategy, high-risk communities could remove over 20% of their tobacco retailers
