Dating Tabakoni
Between 2011 and 2017, excavations by a joint German-Georgian team at the Tabakoni settlement mound in the Colchis lowlands of western Georgia uncovered complex wooden constructions preserved in the waterlogged soils. Combined radiocarbon and dendrochronological dating, the first undertaking of its kind in Colchis, reveals that construction on a stable foundation for the site began in the twentieth century BC and identifies early evidence for the…
At the onset of settled pastoralism – Implications of archaeozoological and isotope analyses from Bronze age sites in the North Caucasus
Bioarchaeological studies provide a valuable contribution to the understanding of the economy and activities of prehistoric populations in mountain regions. The Late Bronze Age in the Caucasus is an epoch of fundamental transformations that is accompanied by the development of a semi-stationary pastoral economy and ultimately by the emergence of combined mountain agriculture. So far, only a few archaeozoological assemblages from this period have …

Excavations of a Barrow near the Village of Kayry in the Upper Reaches of the Tiligul Estuary
In 2020, in the area of the village of Kayry (~ 65—70 km to NE from Odessa), one barrow was excavated, in which 15 graves were discovered. The earliest burials were 4 burials of the Yamnaya culture. One of them (the central grave) was accompanied by several processed stones (stelae). Two graves belonged to the Catacomb culture of different variants, or cultures (Ingul, for sure, and Donetsk, perhaps). In one grave (plundered) there was a vessel o…
The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes
Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…
Settlement Complex of the Andronovo (Fedorovo) Culture in the Tai Locality in Baraba Forest-Steppe
This article describes first results of studies at the Tartas-5 settlement (Vengerovsky District, Novosibirsk Region), located on the collapsing part of the floodplain terrace of the left bank of the Tartas River, in the Tai locality, which, both in ancient times and nowadays, is completely flooded. This circumstance makes it extremely difficult to identify cultural layers. The upper out of two cultural layers at the site contained the finds tent…
Neolithic fishing in the South Caucasus as seen from Aruchlo I, Georgia
The spread of the Neolithic way of life from its centers of origins remains one of the central topics of archaeological research, with ongoing debates about the importance of economic, demographic, and cultural changes in the transition. The Southern Caucasus, while close to one area where agriculture emerged, has remained understudied regarding this spread. Here, information about the role of fish, a topic that has been almost completely neglect…
Eurasia and Ancient Egypt in the Fourth Millennium BCE
This article focuses on technical innovations, new interregional networks, and social upheavals in the fourth millennium BCE . Similar trends in the iconography of the lion, the heraldic animal of power, can be observed in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Caucasus. This indicates that a process of concentration of power in the hands of strong rulers or kings took place relatively synchronously in these regions. The exchange of coveted raw materials su…
Pietrele
The 10 m high Copper Age settlement mound of Pietrele-Măgura Gorgana, situated close to the Danube was part of a large settlement system spread over the whole Westpontic region during the 5th millennium BC. The mound was the outstanding part of a far more complex and larger flat settlement as we now know thanks to geomagnetic prospections and subsequent excavations. Only recently it became evident that the oldest parts of the flat settlement belo…

Bronze Age Burial of a Potter (Tartas-1, Baraba Forest Steppe)
Technical and Social Innovations
The grand narrative of cultural developments claims that all technical achievements in prehistory stemmed from urban centres in Mesopotamia and Egypt. But current studies, for instance on the oldest wagons, have opened up space for alternative working hypotheses and models: modern radiocarbon dating of complexes that revealed the cited innovations, e.g. the oldest wagons, functional metal tools, and an advanced copper metallurgy, which predate th…

Parallele Raumkonzepte

Pietrele in the Lower Danube region
The c. 9m high tell-settlement of Pietrele-Magura Gorgana, situated close to the Danube river, is one of the westernmost sites of the Kod∫adermen-Gumelnita-Karanovo VI cultural complex that spread over the whole Westpontic region during the 5th millennium BC. Until recently tells were equated with the site when, in fact, they represent only the outstanding part of a far more complex settlement system as we now know from Pietrele thanks to geomagn…
Hort und Raum
The essays in this volume, which are conducted across a broad geographical range, reveal the great potential of studying Bronze Age hoard sites. This volume provides a glimpse into current research on Bronze Age hoard sites between the Baltic Sea and Carpathian Basin while also opening up new perspectives on a phenomenon often regarded as fully researched.

Figurines in Pietrele
Major trends in figurine production of the copper age settlement of Pietrele (Romania) are discussed. The bone figurines are seen as an ideological innovation of the Early Copper Age system in the Eastern Balkans

Birch bark in Danish passage graves
Birch bark has so far been observed in passage graves at eight localities. It appears that the bark had originally lain between all the slabs of the dry walling and the intermediary layer of the chamber; it was folded double, forming two layers, with the fold facing in towards the grave chamber. As the bark was put in place during erection it provides an opportunity for dating the construction. Radiocarbon dates have been obtained for one sample …
