  • Evidence for long-distance contacts at the turn of eras

    Milena Teska, Paulina Suchowska‐Ducke et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2026

Located in the North European Plain and the heart of the Polish lands, the historic region of Kuyavia has long been an area where cultural communication and trade routes criss-crossed. This geographical characteristic had transformative effects on the region’s inhabitants of the Pre-Roman and Roman Iron Age, known as the Przeworsk culture. The attributes of a prehistoric society flourishing in a region of peripheral cross-roads are particularly m…

  • Beyond perfumes

Open Access•Urszula Wicenciak, Nicolas Garnier et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026•Referências: 6

Residue analysis of small ceramic bottles from around Tyre in Lebanon reveals chemical traces of wine, resins, pitch and palm oil, indicating their multifunctional use. The authors state that these results enhance understanding of Phoenician container use, trade and production across diverse archaeological contexts

  • Interdisciplinary Insights Into Ochre Burial Rituals in Eastern Slovakia in the Beginning of the 3rd Millennium bc

Open Access•Paweł Jarosz, Eva Horváthová et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Referências: 27

This study investigates ochre from a Yamna culture grave in Michaľany, Eastern Slovakia. Radiocarbon dating resulted in 4330 ± 35 BP, calibrated to 3010–2898 bc . The grave's construction and dating confirm its cultural attribution. SEM and Raman spectrometry identified a red substance as hematite, representing the first evidence of its use in Yamna funerary practices in this region. Geochemical analysis suggests a local origin, likely linked to …

  • Sound from the past. A Neolithic clay whistle from Kiełczewo (western Poland)

Open Access•Iwona Sobkowiak-Tabaka, Aldona Kurzawska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023

  • Elemental variability of prehistoric ceramics from postglacial lowlands and its implications for emerging of pottery traditions – An example from the pre-Roman Iron Age

Open Access•Joanna Jasiewicz, Przemysław Niedzielski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 12

The article presents the first research on the elemental diversity of the prehistoric pottery obtained from the European Postglacial Plain, performed on a large scale (over 500 fragments of pottery were examined). A new analysis approach to the results of the elemental composition of the pottery was presented by using the unsupervised classification of chemical elements. This method is based on the advanced selection of features. The subset of el…

  • Carthaginian pottery in the collection of Izabela Działyńska, née Czartoryska

Open Access•Inga Głuszek, Michał Krueger•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2019

At the end of the nineteenth century Princess Izabela Działyńska (1830–1899), owner of Gołuchów Castle (Poland) and possessor of a huge collection of art, bought in Paris a small assemblage of ancient artefacts which included two jugs of clearly oriental origin. Today they stand in the National Museum in Poznań, Gołuchów branch, as hitherto unrecognized items. This paper attempts to outline the context of their acquisition and to raise the issue …

  • Rethinking Iberian 'warrior' stelae

    Open Access•Marta Díaz-Guardamino, Leonardo García Sanjuán et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2019•Citada por: 9•Referências: 14

Iberian 'warrior' stelae have captured the imagination of researchers and the public for more than a century. Traditionally, stelae were considered 'de-contextualised' monuments, and research typically focused on the study of their iconography, paying little or no attention to their immediate contexts. As a result, despite the large number of these stelae known to date (c. 140) and the ample body of literature that has dealt with them, fundamenta…

  • Could You Take a Picture of My Boat, Please? The Use and Significance of Mediterranean Ship Representations

    Open Access•Mireia López-Bertran, MIREIA LÓPEZ‐BERTRAN et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2008•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

Representations of ships, sailors and seafarers are common in many ancient societies. They were carved, drawn or painted on a great variety of raw materials – stone, wood, metal, textiles and pottery – and can be found in settings such as caves, tombs or royal palaces. Their presence at these sites raises the possibility that these images of maritime life have symbolic or ritual connotations. This paper presents examples of representations of Pho…
