  • Labor Pain Relief and Women’s Evaluations of Childbearing

Open Access•Fangqi Wen, Rui Cao et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

As governments respond to fertility decline with pronatalist policies centered on economic and childcare support, childbirth itself remains undertheorized as an embodied and gendered experience. This study contributes to fertility research and maternal health scholarship by documenting unmet demand for labor pain relief in China and examining how access to pain management shapes women’s evaluations of whether conditions are favorable for having a…

Accurately predicting the interannual variations in autumn typhoon frequency remains a persistent challenge. Our finding discovers a pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly in the western Pacific, termed the horseshoe-shaped mode (HWP), and finds a strong interannual correlation between the Februa…

  • Southern Hemispheric jet swing linked to Arctic stratospheric polar vortex

Open Access•Fei Xie, Xuan Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Our study reframes our understanding of stratosphere–troposphere interactions, traditionally thought to be confined within individual hemispheres, by introducing a novel cross-hemispheric link. We demonstrate that strong boreal winter Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (APV) boosts the transmission of upper tropospheric waves from Northern Hemisphere’s mid-high latitudes to the equator. Facilitated by the tropical central and eastern Pacific’s ‘we…

It is generally understood that foxtail millet and broomcorn millet were initially domesticated in Northern China where they eventually became the dominant plant food crops. The rarity of older archaeological sites and archaeobotanical work in the region, however, renders both the origins of these plants and their processes of domestication poorly understood. Here we present ancient starch grain assemblages recovered from cultural deposits, inclu…

  • The relative impacts of El Niño Modoki, canonical El Niño, and QBO on tropical ozone changes since the 1980s

Open Access•Fei Xie, Jianping Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

Some studies showed that since the 1980s Modoki activity-a different sea surface temperature anomaly pattern from canonical El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the tropics-has been increasing in frequency. In the light of an analysis of the observations and simulations, we found that Modoki, as a new driver of global climate change, can modulate the tropical upwelling that significantly affects mid-lower stratospheric ozone. As a result, it ha…

The Nihewan Basin is a key region for studying the Palaeolithic archaeology of East Asia. However, because of the lack of suitable dating methods and representative lithic technologies in this region, the ‘Middle Palaeolithic’ sites in this basin have been designated based mainly on stratigraphic correlation, which may be unreliable. In this study, three Palaeolithic sites, Motianling, Queergou and Banjingzi, which have been assigned previously t…

  • A connection from Arctic stratospheric ozone to El Niño-Southern oscillation

Open Access•Fei Xie, Jianping Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Antarctic stratospheric ozone depletion is thought to influence the Southern Hemisphere tropospheric climate. Recently, Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) variations have been found to affect the middle-high latitude tropospheric climate in the Northern Hemisphere. This paper demonstrates that the impact of ASO can extend to the tropics, with the ASO variations leading El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events by about 20 months. Using observation…

  • Variations in North Pacific sea surface temperature caused by Arctic stratospheric ozone anomalies

Recently, observations and simulations have shown that Arctic stratospheric ozone (ASO) variations affect the middle-high latitude tropospheric climate in the Northern Hemisphere. In particular, a connection from the ASO to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has been reported. However, no detailed study has been made of a key process in the connection, the influence of ASO on the North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) and its underlying mec…

  • Political Ties and Firm Performance in China

Open Access•Wenjing Xie, Keji Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Studies•2017•Referências: 4

Whether political ties enhance or weaken firm performance has been widely investigated in a number of studies, including some on China. Based on a database of non-financial A-share listed firms from 2004 to 2012, we study the effects of political ties on firm performance within a quantile regression framework. We find that there is a positive relationship between political ties and economic performance, but that it is diminishing with respect to …

  • Oceanic forcing of the interhemispheric SST dipole associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

Open Access•Cheng Sun, Jianping Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

In this study, the interhemispheric sea surface temperature (SST) signature of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is analyzed and compared between observations and slab ocean model (SOM) simulations. Observational analysis suggests a robust interhemispheric SST dipole across the Atlantic associated with the AMO, manifested by a strong inverse relationship between the AMO and subpolar South Atlantic decadal SST anomalies. None of the SOMs…

  • The key role of background sea surface temperature over the cold tongue in asymmetric responses of the Arctic stratosphere to El Niño–Southern Oscillation

Open Access•Fei Xie, Xin Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

The response of the Arctic stratosphere to El Niño activity is strong but the response to La Niña activity is relatively weak. The asymmetric responses of Arctic stratosphere to El Niño and La Niña events are thought to be caused by asymmetric El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections. Here, we suggest that the background sea surface temperature (SST) over cold tongue of tropical eastern Pacific may be an important contributor to the as…
