Peer Interactions, Local Markets, and Within Occupation Wages
This paper explores how occupation‐specific urban wage premia (UWPs) relate to workplace peer interactions and population density. To this end, we use a unique Italian employer–employee dataset that combines administrative records on wages and individual labor market histories with detailed survey data on occupational characteristics. Our findings show that both peer interactions and population density positively influence local wages at the occu…
Q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, Oral-Maxillo-Facial Manifestations and Cognitive Functioning
Background: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2 DS) is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by high phenotypic variability, with an incidence of approximately 1:4000 live births. Most of the existing literature consists of case reports or case series, making it challenging to obtain large cohorts for data comparison and drawing generalizable conclusions. Aim: The aim of this article is to share the clinical experience of patients with 22q11.2 DS …
Entrepreneurs’ impatience and digital technologies
This paper analyzes the impact of entrepreneurs’ preferences (impatience and risk attitudes) on firms’ propensity to invest in both general and digital technologies. Using data from the Rilevazione su Imprese e Lavoro (RIL) survey, conducted on a representative sample of Italian firms, we find that impatience significantly reduces the likelihood of adopting digital investments, even when controlling for risk preferences. To address potential endo…
Global Structure of Dependency and Socio-ecological Crisis
Neoliberal globalization has led to a functional differentiation between an extractive periphery providing natural resources and a productive periphery providing labor for capital accumulation in the center through unequal exchange. The global structure of dependency inherited from colonialism has not been substantially altered, thus challenging the development strategies of peripheral countries. The question of delinking from the global capitali…
Can Choir singing support migrant inclusion? An encouraging survey
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Italy imposed lockdown measures, which also affected places of worship that had to suspend group religious celebrations. This study focuses on the dematerialization of the sacred space, achieved through the creation of the "digital mosque." The author interviewed imams and participated in online worship during the lockdown. The analysis of the data explored various facets, including the reactions of Muslim communitie…
Extra‐EU immigrants and labour productivity
This paper investigates the impact of extra‐EU workers on labour productivity in Italy. To this aim, we take advantage of firm‐level data derived from the Rilevazione Imprese e Lavoro (RIL‐AIDA) surveys merged with the AIDA‐Bureau Van Dijk archive over the period 2007–2015. Using an econometric strategy that accounts for firms' observed heterogeneity and endogeneity issues, we obtain the following results. First, an increase in the share of extra…
Digital technologies, labor market flows and training
New technologies can shape the production process by affecting the way in which inputs are embedded in the organization, their quality, and their use. Using an original employer-employee dataset that merges firm-level data on digital technology adoption and other characteristics of production with employee-level data on worker entry and exit rates from the administrative archive of the Italian Ministry of Labor, this paper explores the effects of…

Deciphering the Commodity
Commodities are economic and symbolic objects, two aspects that merge in Marx’s analysis of commodity fetishism, where two ontological and phenomenological planes operate. Their subject is the twofold social objectivity of the commodity as the product of labor and the object of exchange deriving from the dual nature of capitalist social relations as the real subsumption of labor under the command of capital in production and as market reciprocity…
The Political Implications of Unequal Exchange
Unequal exchange in international trade lies at the crossroads of all the major contradictions of the current global capitalist system: class, spatial and ecological. Countering unequal exchange can offer the basis for a broad global social coalition demanding a new international economic and ecological order. It can unite the claims of social and ecological movements around a common agenda where global social justice meets global environmental j…

Ecologically Unequal Exchange and the Value of Money
Unequal exchange is a common theme in two major global issues, uneven economic development and the environmental crisis. Ecologically unequal exchange is usually derived from the product composition of international trade as an opposition between extractive and industrial economies. However, this explanation fails to capture asymmetric flows of biophysical resources in the new international division of labour. Inspired by an Eco-Marxist approach,…
Global locational inequality
Growth in international trade between countries at different levels of development is one of the main drivers of economic globalization. This phenomenon relates to the new international division of labour in which an Emerging Periphery, hosting the offshoring and outsourcing of world manufacturing, stands between a developed Center and a still backward, Poor Periphery. Following the analysis of the relative and absolute indices of global location…

Value and Unequal Exchange in International Trade
Contrary to the claims made by neoliberal governments and mainstream academics, this book argues that the huge increase in trade in recent decades has not made the world a fairer place: instead, the age of globalization has become a time of mass migration caused by increasing global inequality. The theory of unequal exchange challenges the free trade doctrine, claiming that transfers of value from poorer to richer countries are hidden behind appa…
Neodualism in the Italian business firms
Heterogeneity matters
This study analyses the relationship between flexible employment, productivity and wages, along their distributions. We use an original firm-level dataset, which combines information on workplace characteristics from Rilevazione su Imprese e Lavoro (RIL) with the Analisi Informatizzata delle Aziende Italiane (AIDA) balance sheet information for the universe of Italian non-agriculture/financial corporations. We employ different quantile regression…

Unequal Exchange in the Age of Globalization
Unequal exchange arises when spatial production of value is disjointed from its geographical distribution. A disaggregated monetary model of the world economy is presented on the grounds of Marx’s labor theory of value. All the forms of unequal exchange in international trade are explained, on the basis of a coherent definition of the forms of international value of traded commodities. Estimates of value transfers for recent years show the ongoin…

Labour shares, employment protection and unions in European economies
We analyse the role that the liberalization of temporary contracts plays in labour share in some EU countries. The empirical analysis mainly relies on the EUKLEMS database and applies a difference-in-difference approach. Our results, focused on periods of different length (1996–2007 and 1996–2013), show that legislative innovations that favour the extensive use of temporary contracts negatively affect the labour share, likely because they lower e…

Temporary Employment, Demand Volatility, and Unions
This article investigates the effect of workplace unionization and product market volatility on firms' propensity to use temporary employment. Using Italian firm-level data, the authors show that volatility has a positive impact on the share of temporary contracts. The baseline estimates for the impact of unions are inconclusive, but a clear pattern emerges when a specification including an interaction term with volatility is used. This approach …
Fixed term contracts and employers' human capital
Agglomeration and workplace training
Agglomeration and workplace training: knowledge spillovers versus poaching. Regional Studies. The paper aims at ascertaining whether and how a local agglomeration of highly educated employers affects firms’ propensity to invest in training. On a theoretical ground such agglomeration may favour two different scenarios: a knowledge spillover effect may foster larger investments, or a poaching effect may prevail inducing more competition and less tr…

Working with and for the citizens
This article argues that a better management of increasingly complex socio-ecological systems would require to adopt evidence-based policy-making and improve the science–policy interface by means of participatory action research involving scientists, citizens and policy-makers. The connectivity between the production of scientific evidence by experts and the delivery of policies by policy-makers is currently unsatisfactory. There is the need to f…

Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age Landscapes of Settlement and Mobility in the Middle Euphrates
Urbanization occupies an ambiguous position in the development of the Middle Euphrates region of Turkey and Syria, in part because the area frequently formed a contested region between other stronger Early Bronze Age polities. This paper aims to review evidence from a series of archaeological surveys to illustrate trends in settlement during the 4th and 3rd millennium BC. Re-analysis of survey data from three exemplar regions in the Middle Euphra…
