Access and Exposure
This entry sheds light on two interconnected concepts in transportation and environmental studies, namely accessibility and exposure. Accessibility is referred to as the ease of reaching destinations. There are several ways of measuring accessibility, ranging from simple to complex, infrastructure‐centric to people‐centric, and place‐based to person‐based. Although accessibility measures have practical implications in transportation planning proj…
Selecting and Teaching Young Adult Literature Through Black Historical Consciousness Principles
In this practitioner article, we detail how American English language arts and social studies teachers can select and teach young adult literature using LaGarrett King's Black historical consciousness framework. We provide supplemental, related research along with teaching suggestions and titles for each of the Black historical consciousness principles. We end by calling on educators to reimagine both English language arts and social studies curr…
Petitions, Parliament and Political Culture
This article analyses nearly one million petitions received by the House of Commons to reveal a culture of petitioning that recast the political culture of modern Britain and Ireland. It argues, first, that petitions provided a much more regular and continuous form of interaction between people and Parliament than elections. Second, petitioning-meaning the practices associated with the drafting, signing and presentation of petitions-enabled a vib…
Introduction
This introductory essay, firstly, offers a comparative, historical perspective on the transformation of petitioning into a vehicle for mass popular politics across North America and Western Europe during the “long” nineteenth century (1780–1914). While petitions were well established as an instrument of state in many early modern states, from the late eighteenth century a new type of mass, public, collective petitioning, based on established or i…
Wanting and Having
In this thought-provoking new study, Peter Gurney demonstrates the centrality of consumption to any understanding of British popular politics in the middle third of the nineteenth century. Such an account is timely, and Gurney is quick to point out the contemporary resonance and relevance of these debates, which revolve around the tensions between the market and ideas of democracy, and people as citizens and consumers. Using consumption as an ana…

A Little Goes a Long Way
Although an extensive body of literature highlights the important role of social support for individuals with psychiatric disabilities, definitions of support tend to be restricted—focusing on intimate relationships such as friend and family networks and ignoring the role of casual relationships existing naturally in the community. This mixed‐methods study of 300 consumers of mental health services in the Southeastern US aims to better understand…
Radicals, Tories or Monomaniacs? The Birmingham Currency Reformers in the House of Commons, 1832–67
Benjamin Disraeli described Thomas Attwood as a ‘provincial banker labouring under a financial monomania’. The leader of the Birmingham Political Union, Attwood's Warwickshire accent and support for a paper currency were widely derided at Westminster. However, the themes of Attwood's brief parliamentary career were shared by the other men who represented Birmingham in the early‐ and mid‐Victorian period. None of these MPs were good party men, and…
Popular Petitioning and the Corn Laws, 1833–46
I , Arthur Anderson, a London merchant who hailed from the Shetland Islands, petitioned the House of Commons for the repeal of the corn laws -the statutes which regulated the importation and exportation of cereals, and imposed duties on foreign corn to protect domestic agriculture.Th e Islands were in ' a state of great backwardness ' compared to other areas of the country. On account of their geographical position, soil and climate, the Isl…
The problem withPunch
The comic periodical Punch is a popular source with academics working on the Victorian period and it has often been regarded as a ‘national institution’. This article takes a more nuanced view, arguing that Punch was primarily aimed at a metropolitan and middle-class audience, although it did have considerable reach. Punch largely ignored provincial Britain and had little understanding of its mighty movements like Chartism, the Anti-Corn Law Leag…

On Hanging Loose and Loving
A polemic in which it is argued that the use of drugs among contemporary American youth is but one of many different behaviors and mystiques pervading their life. Thus, a fascination with the encounter, with ethnicity, with expressive politics, with nomadism, with sexuality, as well as with drugs, suggests that youth are engaged in a frustrating dialectic between freedom and commitment. The search for freedom is not political but rather a groping…

An informational analysis of clinical judgment
Cognitive Complexity as a Function of the Significance of the Stimulus Objects being Judged
The question was raised as to whether cognitive complexity (CC) would vary as a function of the stimulus objects being judged. REP Test protocols of 126 Ss were analyzed in terms of two clusters of role models that differed in regard to their social distance from the judge. A significant difference in CC was found; socially distant people were differentiated more complexly than socially close people. The results were interpreted within the contex…
