  • Toussaint Louverture à Nantes, La Rochelle et à Bordeaux

    Open Access•Charles Carter, Carter Charles•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2024

Toussaint Louverture's life trajectory is one of "passages" in the sense of ascension from the lowest to the highest social echelon. However, few French people know that it was this Black general who, in the Saint Domingue colony, took the French Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man to a level France had never imagined by abolishing slavery. It is so because the "passage," or transmission, of Louverture's memory remained for a long time in …

  • L'Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours en Haïti

Charles Carter, Carter Charles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Haitian studies•2022

  • Community and conflict

    Charles Carter•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•1992•Citada por: 4•Referências: 3

This paper examines a short‐lived township insurrection. It is shown that it was amid the violent encounters between the police and the people in Alexandra during the first six months of 1986 that collective initiatives occurred. While the intention of many activists may well have been the desire to construct an alternative hegemony, the process by which ANC rhetoric and strategy resonated through the Alexandra community was more complex than the…

    Charles Carter•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•1991•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

This paper looks at the rise of a youth congress in Alexandra township, South Africa, in the mid‐1980s. The formation of Alexandra Youth Congress involved creating a formal organisational structure which embodied a legalistic and constitutional ethos, central to which was the adoption of the Freedom Charter as a key organisational tenet. Much of the appeal of the Freedom Charter lay in the range of ‘answers’ to organisational concerns that it off…
